Barry Students are Victims in Drill
On February 28th the nursing students participated in the annual Mass Casualty Incident at the American Airlines Arena in cooperation with the City of Miami Fire Rescue Department. The students were moulaged to represent various degrees of injury. This event was an opportunity for nursing students to experience the events that occur in an accident, the treatment and transport from the site to hospital, and the triage/treatment experience. Students were surprised at their experiences and treatment at the hospital. One student said, "The helicopter ride to the hospital was very strange. I was tied to a board and could not move. When I got to the hospital they didn't know I was a student and started to prepare the trauma center. I played along until they were about to cut my clothes off." Other students reported that they would be concerned in a real disaster about the length of time it took for treatment at the site and local hospitals. The City of Miami Fire Rescue Department appreciated all the student feedback and their participation which made the disaster drill a success!
