Associate Dean's Message
Linda Perkel, Ph.D., RN

Linda Perkel, Ph.D., RNQuality and flexibility are words that come to mind when I think of our undergraduate program. We have well-prepared, versatile faculty who have teaching as their highest priority. Our faculty maintain their professional skills through research, professional involvement, and community service. They are leaders and active participants at all levels of professional nursing. Our BSN program has several options that consider students' prior academic preparation and provide opportunities for progressing at different rates. Our website will introduce you to the options that are available.

The faculty at the School of Nursing have developed a contemporary curriculum designed to prepare you for professional nursing practice in the new millennium. The program is grounded in Community Based Education (CBE), meaning each defined community is a unique, multidimensional context for learning. Educational opportunities provide a variety of health care delivery experiences that are determined by the needs and resources of both the community and the nursing program. CBE requires ongoing partnerships among students, faculty, and community members.

At Barry, in addition to preparation for their first professional position, students also develop knowledge and skills which will make them critical thinkers, creative problem-solvers, and effective communicators. They not only learn the skills of professional nursing care, they learn how to be health educators, nursing leaders, and change agents.

The nurse of tomorrow will provide nursing care to culturally diverse populations in a wide array of settings. Barry students have the opportunity to learn in a variety of clinical sites in Miami-Dade, Broward, and Palm Beach Counties. They spend more than 1,100 hours in these rich and carefully selected environments.

Our graduates find careers in numerous settings, from nursing units at major medical centers, local community health clinics, and the U.S. Public Health Service. Many Barry alumni go on to graduate school, advancing as far as doctoral study to become expert practitioners, administrators, and educators. A Barry nurse's horizons are unlimited!
