Pre-Nursing Program
The pre-nursing curriculum is the first two-years of general education, pre-requisites and supporting courses needed for a baccalaureate degree in nursing at Barry University. However, students can complete the required courses within a shorter period of time by taking selected courses in the summer.
All pre-nursing students will be advised in the Division of Nursing to ensure satisfactory completion of required courses needed for admission to the nursing program. Completion of pre-nursing does not guarantee admission to the nursing program. Students must apply separately to the nursing program after meeting the requirements for admission.
Freshman students applying for the nursing program will have to complete all pre-requisite courses before admission can be considered.
Transfer students applying for the Traditional BSN Program will be allowed up to nine (9) non-nursing course credits to complete and students applying for the Accelerated BSN Program will be allowed up to six (6) non-nursing course credits to complete before consideration may be given for nursing program. All students must complete the following courses before acceptance to the nursing program: Anatomy and Lab, Physiology and Lab, Microbiology and Lab, Biochemistry and lab, Therapeutic Nutrition, Developmental psychology and statistics.
Pre-Nursing Program Admissions
Freshman - High school GPA of 2.5 or higher; completion of high school or college courses in biology and chemistry (including laboratories) with a minimum grade of C in each; completion of Algebra II or equivalent, with a minimum grade of C; and, achievement of a minimum score of 800 on the SAT or 17 on the ACT.

Note: A GPA of 3.2 is required to enter the BSN Program. If a transfer student does not have sufficient pending credits to achieve a 3.2 GPA, the student may not be eligible to progress to the BSN Program.
In addition to nursing courses in the upper division (third and fourth level nursing courses), 9 credits must be taken at the upper level (300-400 level courses or junior/senior level coursework). These courses are offered at accredited four year colleges and universities and Barry University will transfer up to six qualified upper division credits.
This information is not intended to be all inclusive, but rather as a guide for prospective students. Final program planning requires a completed application to Barry University and, if accepted, a meeting with a nursing advisor.
