Primary Care Nursing Center (PCNC)

The Primary Care Nursing Center (PCNC) was established in 1993 as a nurse-managed "center without walls." The PCNC provides primary health care services and health education programs to more than 3,000 school children, families, and teachers in five parochial and one public elementary school in Miami-Dade County. The PCNC also provides health education services to a temporary residence shelter for women and children who are victims of domestic violence.

Barry University's 500 undergraduate and graduate nursing students use the Primary Care Nursing Center as a clinical learning and practice site. The undergraduate students focus on providing health education programs to the various grade levels, while the graduate students use the school health offices for advanced practice clinical opportunities. The students and faculty from the division of nursing also conduct and facilitate health education days at each of the schools. An annual teachers' workshop, hosted by the division of nursing, promotes new health knowledge, wellness, and prevention in the classroom.

Objective

Providing increased health and social services to children and their families is the primary objective of the Primary Care Nursing Center.

Goals

  • Assuring every student is in school and is able to participate to the best of his/her ability.
  • Improving access to preventive and primary health care in schools, particularly for those without a health care provider.
  • Promoting positive health behaviors through education.
  • Encouraging prevention of disease and maintenance of health.
  • Increasing health knowledge and improving decision-making skills of families and children.

Healthy Lifestyles Program

Screenings indicated that the epidemic of childhood obesity is widespread in these schools. Obesity often leads to hypertension, diabetes, and cardiovascular disease. The PCNC is offering a six week Healthy Lifestyles Program to children and parents in these schools which includes education in nutrition, physical activity, adequate sleep and self-esteem, and smoking prevention.
