Dominican Preaching in Action

Those who follow the teachings of St. Dominic were called to preach the Truth to others that all persons might live in freedom and love. Preaching the Word of God and living that Word are One for the Dominicans (the Order of Preachers).

Founded in Faith. Dominicans preach in action—they are called to make the preaching real. Based in a faith grounded in the recognition of God's love for all Creation and God’s desire for its flourishing, they believe they can make the preaching real. They encourage all people, whatever their path, to answer God's call--to love God and neighbor in response to God’s outpouring love.

Love’s Call to Service and Justice. We cannot flourish unless all flourish. All are called to love and serve others and to care for Creation. In 2006, the Dominican Family issued a Call to Justice that framed their active expression of love for all Creation by outlining specific issues they would address:

Initiatives were developed to address each issue, all specific to contemporary world conditions:

    • Global Warming
    • The death penalty
    • Disarmament
    • Iraq
    • Israel and Palestine
    • Africa
    • Columbia
    • Migration/immigration
    • Human trafficking
    • United Nations

Preaching in Action at the Local Level. The Center for Dominican Studies and Barry University have offered a number of educational workshops, justice-promoting events, academic presentations, and liturgical celebrations focused around the Dominican Family’s Call to Justice. In this section of our website, we will record some of these Center-sponsored and Barry-sponsored activities, integrating them with resources drawn from the larger Church Tradition and the Dominican tradition as well as pertinent Barry faculty publications.
