Sr. Arlene Scott, OP and Fr. David Caron, OP, will team-direct the annual summer retreat in New Orleans. The topic: “The Psalms”.
May 11-15, 2005 – Archdiocesan Permanent Diaconate Ordination Retreat – John Paul II Retreat Center, Miami.
The CDS Director will preach the retreat to the men in the Archdiocese preparing for ordination.
May 10, 2005 – St. Elizabeth of Hungary Parish – Broward – 7:00-9:00 pm
A presentation was made for the Year of the Eucharist. The title: The Joy of Our Catholic Heritage.
April 27 -May 5, 2005 – Order of Malta Retreat – Lourdes, France
CDS Director was invited to preach during the annual Malta retreat to Lourdes, France. 410 pilgrims took part in the pilgrimage.
April 23, 2005 – Dominican Laity Gathering, Miami
The CDS Director was invited to give the morning reflection for the Dominican Laity at St. Martha’s parish in Miami. The presentation focused on the “four pillars” of Dominican Life with a special emphasis on preaching. Caron showed some of the Center’s “Pathways of Possibilities” TV Shows to illustrate how the Center is preaching through the media.
April 19, 2005 – Fr. Timothy Radcliffe, OP: “How Can We Speak about Our Faith”
Former Master General of the Dominican Order arrived from England to speak to Barry faculty, students, staff and other interested parties on the topics of faith and hope. Radcliffe, while speaking to the election of the new Pope – Benedict XVI, said that this could be a time of unity in the Church. Using the scripture from the Last Supper he tied Catholic heritage, Dominican identity and Catholic Social Teaching together as being faithful to the tradition and to scripture. The two hundred that attended shared in a reception with Fr. Radcliffe following the 5:00 pm Vespers liturgy in Cor Jesu Chapel.
April 17, 2005 – Schott Center for the Deaf: “Catholic Social Teaching”
The Adrian Dominican Director of the Schott Center invited the CDS Director to come and speak on the topic of Catholic Social Teaching. Twenty five people gathered for the “signed” presentation as Dave Caron, O.P. lead the group through a presentation on the Church’s teaching and answered questions.
April 13, 2005 – “Dominican Saints Speak to Your Issues” Presentation
The last “Dominican Saints” presentation was held on this day with the focus being on Dominican Saint Margaret of Costello. Margaret, who died in 1600’s was born disabled and is now a patron saint for those with disabilities. A collaborative presentation was planned with the Department of Theology and Philosophy as well as the Office of Disability Services at Barry. The presentation consisted of faculty speaking of the need to change pedagogical styles to serve the specific needs of disabled students. Five disabled students were present to give their critique.
April 12 and 14, 2005 - Preaching Workshop for the Ordained: “Preaching in a Multicultural Church”
Fr. Jorge Presmanes, O.P. was the presenter for both of these workshops (1-4pm) in both Broward and Dade. These workshops for the deacons and priests led those in attendance through the theological, pastoral and practical issues that surround this very important topic here in South Florida. Using the theological method of Practical Theology, Fr. Presmanes led the group through the challenges and joys that multicultural parishes have, especially when preparing preachings.
March 31, 2005 – Holy Cross, Vero Beach “A Mystagogy of Holy Week”
Two presentations were given at Holy Cross Parish in Vero Beach. The Center Director was invited to speak on the theological method of “Mystagogy” which is a reflection “back” or a ritual moment for a group in the church. The ritual that was reflected on was the baptisms that occurred on Holy Saturday evening. The 8:30 am presentation was attended by 128 people. The 12:30 pm presentation was attended by about 40 people which were mostly business people on their lunch break.
March 30, 2005 – “Pathways of Possibilities” TV Premier (2nd Season)
80 faculty, staff, students and guests attended a Mission Effectiveness lunch in the Kostka Room of Thompson Hall for the premier of Season 2 of “Pathways of Possibilities” which airs o WXEL every Sunday morning. The topics of the 15 shows were (to name a few) “Dance as Prayer”, “Prophets of Joy: A Children Choir”, “Sacred Dwellings” and “Meals as Sacred Story”. All in attendance appeared to enjoy how the Center “preaches” through the media using the TV shows.
March 23, 2005 – Faculty/Parish Staff In-Service: Our Lady of the Holy Rosary, Miami
Two presentations were made to the 47 faculty and staff of Our Lady of the Holy Rosary Parish and School. The topics of the day were: “How to know and Promote Catholic Identity” and “The Power of the Cross: A Lenten Conversation”. The day consisted of prayer, lecture, group work, quiet meditation (Dominican contemplation) and group reflection.
March 3, 2005 - Student Preachers Gathering
The student preachers met on March 3, 17, 31, April 14, and 21 to share a meal and to participate in Theological reflection on the Sunday Scriptures in order to preach at University rituals.
March 2, 2005 – “Lent: A Time to Trust God” St. John Neumann Parish, Miami
A presentation on the theology and symbols of Lent was given in St. John Neumann Parish in Kendall. 80 People attended this presentation as part of their weekly guest speakers series for Lent.
February 25-27, 2005 – National Gathering of Directors, Centers for Dominican Studies
The first gathering of Directors of Centers for Dominican Studies was held in River Forest, IL at Dominican University (Priory Campus). This gathering enabled the nine directors to learn about each other, to share programmatic ideas, to talk about common interests, to pray together and do Theological reflection. The hope is that this will become an annual event. The Centers that attended are:
