The Barry University Chemistry Club is one of 44 organizations in the country to be awarded the Outstanding Chapter Award by the American Chemistry Society (ACS) for the 2013-14 school year.
Each year, the ACS’s Society Committee on Education (SOCED) selects student chapters to receive special recognition on the basis of their programs and activities, as described in their chapter reports. Awards are classified as outstanding, commendable, and honorable mention.
Barry’s chapter received the highest recognition for their high rankings in community service, professional development, and chemistry-based activities and programming. For the 2013-2014 academic year, ACS honored 44 outstanding, 104 commendable, and 151 honorable mention chapters.
The Chemistry Club is a member of Barry’s Student Organizational Counsel and currently consists of 20 students, 18 of which are members of the ACS. The club is co-sponsored by professors Tamara Hamilton, PhD, and George Fisher, PhD. The Barry Chapter has won an ACS award for each of the past 20 years of the Club’s existence: 12 “Outstanding” and 8 “Commendable” awards.
