Two RISE students, Kamren Livingston and Pedro Sanchez who are both Biology majors, received awards for their poster presentations at the national Annual Biomedical Research Conference for Minority Students (ABRCMS), which took place Nov. 9-12 in Tampa, Fla. Gabriela Lin, a biology major, also received a conference-sponsored travel award to present at the meeting.
Livingston conducted research this past summer at Massachusetts Institute of Technology. His research involved “depletion of essential proteins leads to DNA repair mediated bacterial cell death.”
Sanchez investigated how the non-structural protein σ1s enhances reovirus resistance to type 1-interferon responses. He did his investigation this past summer during an internship at the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences. Lin, while at the University of Missouri this summer, investigated whether the loss of estrogen receptor alpha causes metabolic and endothelial dysfunction in male mice.
Over 3,900 were in attendance, with 1,800 undergraduate student presentations in different categories of biomedical science research. A total of six students attended the conference including two 2015 poster awardees, Bertina Telusma and Joshua Kelly. Dr. Leticia Vega, Dr. Flona Redway and Norma Barrera also accompanied the students.
