Two RISE students awarded for poster presentations at ABRCMS 2017

RISE students, Jocelyn Baquier, Chemistry major, and Diana Cordero, Biology and Chemistry major, received awards for their poster presentations at the national Annual Biomedical Research Conference for Minority Students (ABRCMS), which took place November 1-5, 2017 in Phoenix, AZ. Llona Kavege and Michaela Reyes also attended the conference as observers.

Jocelyn conducted research this past summer at the University of California, San Diego. Her research involved “cereblon as a desmoplakin-associated regulator at the intercalated disc.”

Diana investigated long-chain diols as a paleoenvironmental proxy in lake sediments this past summer during an internship at Brown University, RI.

Over 4,200 were in attendance, with 1,900 undergraduate student poster presentations in different categories of biomedical science research with 320 awards presented. Pedro Sanchez former RISE student and 2016 poster awardee, currently in the Post-Baccalaureate Research Education Program (PREP) at Wake Forest University School of Medicine, NC also presented at the conference. Other former RISE/MARC students currently in graduate programs also attended the conference as graduate school recruiters: Maxime Jean, who is completing a MD/PhD program at the University of Rochester Medical Center (URMC); Nicole Lopez, a PhD student at Augusta University, GA; and former MARC student, Alec Davila, MD/PhD student at Augusta University, GA. Dr. Flona Redway accompanied the students.
