Feast of St. Thomas Aquinas (Vespers)

Tuesday January 30, 2018 | 5:15 pm
Cor Jesu Chapel

The church has expressed and taught us the need for prayer in community and at different times throughout the day.

Therefore, the church has given us the Liturgy of the Hours or the Divine Office, of which vespers is a part.  Also known as evening prayer, at vespers we come together to give thanks for what has been given to us during the day and for the things, we have done well.

St. Thomas Aquinas was born about the year 1225 into the family of the Count of Aquino. He first studied at the monastery of Monte Cassino and later at the University of Naples. Afterward he joined the Order of Preachers (Dominicans) and completed his studies at Paris and Cologne, his instructor being St. Albert the Great. Becoming himself a teacher, he wrote many learned volumes, among them the Summa Theologiae, and was especially renowned for his philosophical and theological studies. St. Thomas died near Terracina on March 7, 1274, but his memory is honored on January 28th.
