A Message from Student Health Services

The 2018 New Year is upon us and so is a very serious Flu Season.  Although it is still strongly recommended, the Flu vaccination is only estimated to be 10-30% effective against this year flu strains.  There are multiple strains of the flu so it is possible to still catch the flu even if you have had your vaccination. However, experts are saying the severity of the symptoms for those whom have had the vaccination are less than those who were not immunized.

In addition to the flu there are multiple cold viruses circulating in Florida and the United States. These have been blamed on the long lingering cold symptoms that individuals have been dealing with since late November.  Generally, people with colds are more likely to have a runny or stuffy nose. Colds generally do not result in serious health problems and .they are not accompanied by high fevers.  The Flu is a different story.

Symptoms of the Flu are:

  • Body aches and pain
  • Cough and chest discomfort which may become sever
  • Early and significant exhaustion
  • Fatigue and weakness that may last up to 2–3 week
  • Headache
  • High fever (102–104 degrees F) for 3–4 day
  • Occasional stuffy nose, sneezing and sore throat
  • You may also have nausea and vomiting

The best way to not get the Flu is still to get vaccinated.  Thirty percent is better than Zero percent!   Student Health Services has a very limited supply for registered students.  Employees can get the vaccination at their local Walgreens, Publix or CVS for a Zero Copay through the employee insurance.

It is imperative that everyone practice good health hygiene.

  • Wash your hands frequently for at least 20 seconds, especially before and after you eat and after you sneeze, cough or blow you nose!
  • If soap and water is not available use a waterless hand sanitizer.
  • If you are coughing or sneezing, cough into your mid-arm not your hands.
  • Be aware of potentially contaminated areas: door knobs, key board, cell phones, elevator buttons, and public dining tables. Clean them regularly,
  • DO NOT Share drinks or utensils!!!!
  • Maintain your own towel and wash cloth.

Please be courteous and understanding, DO NOT go to work or class if you are running a fever above 100.5F or 38.1 C. You are highly contagious and social distancing does not prevent the spread.   You are most contagious during the first four days of the virus. Professors and supervisors are asked to be understanding at this time.  This Flu season is considered very dangerous.  There have been a much higher than average complication rates and death rates associated with the Flu.

Unfortunately, the Flu and the common cold is caused by a virus.  Antibiotics do not work unless the individual develops a secondary infection.  Prophylaxis antibiotics are not recommended.  If you are diagnosed within the first 72 hours of the flu your provider may recommend an antiviral to attempt to shorten to course of the illness.

Please keep in mind there are many respiratory viruses.  It is possible to experience relapses this season.   If we all practice good health hygiene we may be able to control the impact on campus.

Wishing You Good Health,

The Staff of Student Health Services.
