Profile
Elsie M. Miranda, DMin, is associate professor of Theology at Barry University, Miami Shores, Florida where she serves as Director of the Master of Arts in Practical Theology and Ministry, as well as Director of Ministerial Formation. She is Cuban American, born and raised in Miami, Florida. She attended the University of Florida where she earned a BS in Psychology with a Minor in Religion; Boston College where she earned a Master of Arts in Pastoral Ministry with a concentration in Religious Education, and Barry University where she earned a DMin in Practical Theology.
Dr. Miranda began her tenure at Barry University in 1996 as the associate director of Mission and Ministry. Since that time, she continues to serve the local and national community by promoting the mission and core commitments of the University. In 2006, she joined the Department of Theology and Philosophy as Director of Ministerial Formation. In addition to teaching and mentoring students, Dr. Miranda has served as an elected member of the Ethics and the Faculty Welfare committees. As associate professor of practical theology, her areas of theological interest are on inter-culturality and ministerial formation, liberating theologies (feminist, queer and Latin American) and on the paradigmatic shift that continued social, ecclesial, and political polarities will generate within the next century and how these will impact the church and society.
She contributed to the edited volume Hispanic Ministry in the 21st Century: Present and Future, (Convivuum Press, 2010) and was co-editor and contributor in Calling for Justice Throughout the World, Catholic Women Theologians on the HIV AIDS Pandemic, (Continuum Press, 2009). Dr. Miranda continues to explore contemporary theological issues in the church and the world through her scholarly work, her teaching and dialogue with students, and her service to the community. Most recently, she participated in the Hispanic Summer Program 2011 at Mundelein Seminary and served on the Association of Theological Schools committee on the Revision of Standards 2009 - 2011.
Dr. Miranda is an active member of the Catholic Theological Society of America (CTSA), a Board member of the Academy of Catholic Hispanic Theologians in the U.S. (ACHTUS), as well as an active member of the Association of Graduate Programs in Ministry (AGPIM).
In the summer of 2012, Dr. Miranda will attend and present at a consultation in Oslo, Norway on The Future of Theological Education in Europe and Beyond, sponsored by the World Council of Churches. She looks forward to further collaboration with colleagues to advance the theological education and professional integrity of ecclesial ministry in the U.S. and abroad.
