ADSOE alumna named one of top principals in Florida

Barry University Alumna Linda Amica-Roberts is one of six school principals in Florida to be presented the inaugural Elite Principal Award by the nonprofit Florida TaxWatch. She earned her Ph.D. in leadership and education from Barry in 2007.

The new award is granted to the best principals in the state of Florida according to analysis released by Florida TaxWatch and Florida State University. The analysis considered student data from more than 3,000 high-poverty schools. Principals were evaluated based solely on student achievement gains in math and reading. To determine the best principals, TaxWatch and Florida State used a formula that calculates whether student progress surpassed what was expected given prior achievement.

Amica-Roberts, who was recently promoted to administrative director for the district’s Education Transformational Office, was formerly the principal of Coconut Palm K-8 Academy when the study took place.

The six honorees will participate in a four-year study to identify the traits, habits and practices of top-performing school leaders. All six principals will be honored at a ceremony in Tallahassee on Jan. 23. Each will receive a $5,000 reward.
