STEM Learning Community

The Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math Learning Community (STEM LC) is one of five learning communities on the Barry University campus. Each LC aligns with specific disciplines, thereby providing specialized programming to fit the needs of the respective academic majors. Participation in the STEM LC fosters a sense of community while you acquire the tools and exposure to make significant inroads into getting the practical experience and confidence you need to excel in your chosen career path. Students with academic majors in the following STEM disciplines are welcome and encouraged to sign up for the STEM LC if they meet the following criteria:

Eligibility

To participate in the STEM LC, you must be:

  • In your first year
  • A STEM major (or interested in STEM):
    • Biology (Pre-professional track; Traditional track; Marine Biology specialization)
    • Chemistry (Biochemistry specialization)
    • Mathematics (Data Analytics specialization)
    • Computer Science (Cyber Security specialization; Data Analytics specialization; Digital Media specialization)
    • Computer Information Science (Cyber Security specialization; Digital Media specialization)
  • Eligible for MAT 095 or higher
  • Eligible for ENG 111 or higher

Further, all STEM LC students will be enrolled in designated sections of the following courses along with content tailored for STEM disciplines along with major-specific coursework:

Fall Semester Courses

  • ORI 100: First-Year Experience Seminar (1 credit)
  • CS 151: Computational Thinking (3 credits)

Spring Semester Courses

  • ENG 112: Techniques of Research (3 credits)
  • PSY 281: Introduction to Psychology (3 credits)

As a member of the STEM Learning Community you will:

  • Set the stage for a successful undergraduate career by joining a network of like-minded peers with a passion for science, technology, engineering, and math
  • Train for your future career with one-on-one academic and career guidance
  • Engage in enrichment activities, including field trips and workshops that open your world to the possibilities of a STEM-related career
  • Maintain personal and professional bonds that will serve as a support system during your entire four years at Barry University and beyond
