| Welcome to the
Department of Physical Sciences
The Physical Sciences Department offers areas
of study in chemistry and physics for chemistry majors and chemistry
and physics minors, and for pre-medicine, pre-dentistry, pre-veterinary
and pre-pharmacy programs. Five Ph.D. chemistry faculty members
and two full-time chemistry staff members teach a full academic
chemistry major, including courses in general, organic, analytical,
inorganic, physical, environmental, and biochemistry, as well as
providing supporting courses for programs in biology, nursing, physical
therapy and pre-engineering. Two Ph.D. physics faculty members provide
courses for a minor in physics as well as support courses for chemistry
and biology majors. Many biology majors also earn a minor in chemistry
and some biology majors do a dual major in biology and chemistry.
Physical Sciences faculty at Barry University
have three goals for their students:
1. to ensure competence.
2. to instill confidence.
3. to enhance self-reliance.
To meet these goals faculty engage in a variety
of classroom, non-classroom and research activities. A small student-to-professor
ratio allows professors to give students individual attention, not
only in the lecture, but particularly in the laboratory and advanced
courses. Professors get to know students by name. We train our students
to become laboratory problem-solvers with a firm underpinning of
theoretical concepts. In addition, our students are given individual
and group opportunities on modern instrumentation to prepare them
for their careers.
The Chemistry Department at Barry University is
an exciting place to be, with new faculty, instrumentation, programs
and completely renovated laboratories equipped with state-of-the-art
instrumentation. Our lecture class sizes rarely exceed thirty students
and our laboratory sizes are twenty or less. If you are looking
for a successful chemistry program with emphasis on you, the student,
Barry University is the place to come. Feel free to contact any
of the faculty for additional information. |
