Chemistry Club

Barry University’s faculty, staff, and students are very active in outside activities as well. Established in 1993 and chartered by the ACS (American Chemical Society) as a Student Affiliate Chapter in 1994, the Chemistry Club (http://student.barry.edu/SO-CC/purpose.htm) has won several ACS awards including Outstanding Chapter for the last 10 years in a row.

Each year the Chemistry Club along with department members visit local elementary schools to perform chemical magic shows to both educate and entertain third graders. Club members also participate in the Miami AIDS Walk, collect Christmas gifts for pediatric AIDS children, collect relief items for victims of hurricanes and earthquakes, hold periodic fundraising and host social events that include scientific guest speakers.

The Club members also serve as peer tutors for students in chemistry courses. Membership is open to any Barry student interested in chemistry. Chemistry majors and minors are encouraged to join the ACS as a student affiliate. Applications are available from the Club’s faculty advisor, Dr. George Fisher (Wiegand 128A; (305) 899-3430; gfisher@mail.barry.edu) or on-line at www.chemistry.org/education/student.

Gamma-Sigma Epsilon Chemistry Honor Society

This Honor Society recognizes students who have outstanding academic achievement in chemistry courses at Barry. Initiation ceremonies take place during the fall semester. The student must have a minimum chemistry GPA of 3.00 after having taken 16 credits in chemistry as well as a minimum overall 3.00 GPA. Applications may be obtained from Dr. George Fisher (Wiegand 128A, (305) 899-3430, gfisher@mail.barry.edu).

Grants

Science faculty conducting research receive funding through various grants including those offered by the NIH (National Institute of Health) to carry out various research projects on as well as off campus.

Underrepresented minority students (African Americans, Alaskan Natives, American Indians, Asian Islanders, Hispanics, Pacific Islanders) interested in research should contact faculty members to obtain information on their research projects as well as their participation in the following programs:

  • MARC U*STAR (Minority Access to Research Careers Undergraduate Student Training in Academic Research)
  • MBRS SCORE (Minority Biomedical Research Support, Support of Continuous Research Excellence)
  • MIRT (Minority International Research Training)

Laboratory Aide and Laboratory Assistant Positions

Students may apply for laboratory work as either a laboratory aide or as a laboratory assistant. The laboratory aide generally assists the lab director with the set-up of experiments for the various teaching labs, maintenance of glassware and chemical inventory databases, general maintenance of the chemical stockroom, and routine inspection of emergency safety equipment. Students must either be a chemistry major or a chemistry minor and have successfully completed either CHE 110 or CHE 111.

The laboratory assistant (commonly referred to as the “TA”) assists the lab instructor with helping student perform various experiments as well as prepare any solutions, as needed. The TA must have successfully completed the course s/he will be assisting in with a grade of “A” or “A-“ and be available during those scheduled lab hours. Students applying for this TA position must be a science major—chemistry major or minor preferred. Applications for these laboratory positions are available through the department’s Stockroom & Laboratory Director, Maria Aloya (Wiegand 125, (305) 899-3434, maloya@mail.barry.edu).

Pals-4-Paws

B.U.C.K.I. (Barry University Cat & Kitten Intervention) is a spay and neuter program initiated by the Pre-Vet Club in 1999 by student Amy Long and Dr. Paul Higgs, Faculty Advisor. B.U.C.K.I. program involves volunteers to check traps, replenish food and clean water in stationed areas, call coordinators and aid in fundraisers. Cats and kittens that have been socialized are placed for adoption. For more information contact Dr. Paul Higgs (Wiegand 123, (305) 899-3376, phiggs@mail.barry.edu).

Physical Sciences Honor Scholarship Award

Each Fall and Spring semester, junior and senior chemistry majors are awarded scholarships ($500 – 750) based on academic achievement and financial need. Recipients of the award will be presented with a certificate during the end-of-semester department party. Applications are available on the Wiegand 148 (Computer Room & Library) door as well as from the department secretary, Mrs. Beth Culverson (Wiegand 121, (305) 899-3435, e-mail: bculverson@mail.barry.edu).

Science Olympiad

Each spring, the department hosts the science Olympiad; a competition designed for local area high school students taking chemistry I, chemistry II and physics. The students participate in a day-long competition of a written test, an oral team competition, and a lab competition. Over 150 students from more than 13 schools from the Miami-Dade and Broward Country area participate each year. For more information, contact Dr. Tony Wallner (WIE 122, (305) 899-3433, twallner@mail.barry.edu).
