Dr. Shanika Hill led an effort to help diabetics on the island.

From February 29 to March 7, 2020, Barry University’s School of Podiatric Medicine hosted an alternative Spring Break in the Bahamas. Barry brought much needed assistance to residents, many of whom were greatly affected by Hurricane Dorian.

The mission of 14 healthcare professionals and students was led by Dr. Shanika Hill. They traveled from Miami to Nassau to fulfill their mission of helping hundreds of vulnerable, diabetic patients before the COVID-19 pandemic spread on the island. The special campaign saved limbs and brought much needed medical supplies, hygiene items, and 500 pairs of diabetic shoes.

Dr. Hill is a Barry graduate who is now the school’s Associate Dean of Clinical Education and an Assistant Professor of Podiatric Medicine. She is also a podiatrist at Miami’s Jesse Trice Community Health Center. Dr. Hill was recently quoted as saying, “One of my main goals in life is to do medicine that gives back to the community… to low income, no income… people from minority communities who need podiatric care and cannot afford it.”

We applaud Dr. Hill and the others who went on this mission to keep Bahamas Strong.
