Dr. Carbonell Earns Barry Distinguished Alumnus Award
(MIAMI SHORES, FL) The Barry University Alumni Association and the Barry University School of Podiatric Medicine are pleased to announce that Jaime Carbonell, DPM, '96 was recently awarded the prestigious Distinguished Alumni Award for 2011 at a ceremony held at the Mandarin Oriental Hotel in Miami. The award is presented to the most distinguished graduates of Barry University for their professional achievements, contributions to society and support of the university.
Jaime Carbonell graduated from the Barry University School of Podiatric Medicine in 1996. Dr. Carbonell is a dedicated podiatric physician working in private practice with Dr. Robert Garnet and serves as the podiatric residency director for Westchester General Hospital and Jackson South Community Hospital. He currently maintains appointments with six Miami area hospitals and is a member of three professional podiatric medical associations. His podiatric interests range from diabetic foot care to reconstructive foot and ankle surgery. Dr. Carbonell is board qualified in reconstructive foot and ankle surgery and is a diplomat of the American Board of Podiatric Surgery.
Dr. Carbonell practices by the Barry University mission statement by giving back to those who are suffering economic hardships as at least 10% of his physician services are provided to indigent patients as charitable care. While it is hard to quantify the total impact of providing these services, it is certain that many lives have been improved through the high quality of podiatric screening and preventative care that he provides to all of his patients regardless of economic status.
Additionally, Dr. Carbonell participated in the Barry University Yucatan Crippled Children's Project, where he traveled to Mexico to perform complex surgery on crippled disadvantaged children as a student and during his residency training. Since that initial trip, he has been back at least three times as the attending physician for additional mercy missions. He has also facilitated the expansion of podiatric surgical privileges in several local hospitals.
According to Dr. Carbonell, "Barry's academic and clinical training in podiatric medicine is the best in the country and it prepared me for my life's mission to provide medical care for others, relieve their pain, and give back to those who suffer from economic hardships."
Dr. Carbonell provides an important service to future Doctors of Podiatric Medicine through his involvement in the residency programs of Westchester General Hospital and Jackson South Hospital. Dr. Carbonell provides vital three-year residency training to future podiatrists, many of whom are Barry graduates, through these hospitals and in his private practice. This is especially important since there is a current shortage of podiatric residency positions for students across the country. Over the last 12 years he has trained over 50 podiatric residents in reconstructive rear foot and ankle surgery.
Dr. Jeffrey Jensen, Dean and Professor of Podiatric Medicine and Surgery for the Barry University School of Podiatric Medicine praised Dr. Carbonell by stating "in addition to providing quality podiatric medical care and surgical treatment of hundreds of patients in South Florida, Dr. Carbonell has mentored the next generation of leaders in the field of podiatric medicine. For this, the Barry School of Podiatric Medicine is very proud of Dr. Carbonell."
