Bunions

A bunion deformity is a bump on the side of the foot, just behind the big toe. The bump may or may not be painful. Bunions are often inherited and are produced by foot structure and function. As a bunion progresses, the big toe itself will shift toward the other toes. In severe cases, the big toe will actually overlap the second toe.

Symptoms, which occur at the site of the bunion, may include:

• Joint pain
• Joint inflammation and redness
• A burning sensation
• Perhaps some numbness

Other conditions which may appear with bunions include calluses on the big toe, sores between the toes, ingrown toenail, and restricted motion of the toe.

The podiatrist may take x-rays to determine the degree of the deformity and assess the changes that have occurred. Once the podiatrist has evaluated your particular case, a treatment plan can be developed that is suited to your needs.
