Gout

Gout is a disorder that results from the uric acid metabolism in the tissues or a joint. Gout attacks are caused by deposits of crystallized uric acid in the joint.

Signs & Symptoms include:

  • sudden pain
  • swelling
  • redness
  • warmness and stiffness in the joint.
  • low-grade fever may also be present

The patient usually suffers from two sources of pain. The crystals inside the joint cause intense pain whenever the affected area is moved. The inflammation of the tissues around the joint also causes the skin to be swollen, tender and sore if it is even slightly touched.

In diagnosing gout, the podiatrist will take your personal and family history and examine the affected joint. Laboratory tests and x-rays are sometimes ordered to determine if the inflammation is caused by something other than gout.

In some cases of gout, surgery is required to remove the uric acid crystals and repair the joint. Your foot and ankle surgeon will determine the procedure that would be most beneficial in your case.
