Chain of Command

The President is the responsible authority for hurricane emergencies. The following chain of command will be followed for hurricane emergencies:

  1. President
  2. Provost
  3. Vice President for Business and Finance
  4. Vice President for Student Affairs
  5. General Counsel
  6. Vice President for Institutional Advancement

During the storm, and when campus shelters have been opened, the Director of Public Safety will be responsible for enforcing shelter regulations and making any necessary decisions regarding the safety and security of persons and property. The senior administrative officer on campus will be consulted as necessary and when possible.

Command Decision Team (CDT)

The CDT is comprised of the President and ECA, the Associate Vice President for Facilities, the Associate Vice President for University Relations, the Director of Public Safety and the Chief Information Officer. Once a storm enters the "alert quadrant", the CDT will begin to meet on a regular basis for the purpose of anticipating states of readiness pursuant to our hurricane guidelines. The 'alert quadrant' represents an area that is approximately 1000 miles from the Florida coast, between latitudes 15 and 30, and longitudes 65 and 90. Barry University is located at approximately latitude 25.8 and longitude 80.2. An average storm will travel approximately 250 miles per day so that would give the CDT 3-5 days to react. Decisions made at the CDT would then be promulgated as necessary to the Hurricane Task Force, or directly to the entire campus through all of our communications channels.
