Dr. Michael J. Provitera is an associate professor of organizational behavior at Barry University, Miami, Florida USA. He received a B.S. with a major in marketing and a minor in economics at the City University of New York in 1985. In 1989, while concurrently working on Wall Street as a financial analyst, Dr. Provitera earned his M.B.A. in finance from St. John’s University in Jamaica, Queens, New York. He obtained his D.B.A. (Doctorate of Business Administration) in management from Nova Southeastern University, Ft. Lauderdale, Florida in 2000. His dissertation chair was Dr. Joseph Hair, originally from Louisiana State University and now at Kennesaw University---Dr. Hair is a premier marketing expert with well known textbooks in marketing and statistics. Dr. Provitera joined Saint Peter’s College in Jersey City, New Jersey, as an Assistant Professor of Management on a six year tenure track, in September 2000. In January, 2004, he accepted an Assistant Professor of Organizational Behavior position at Barry University. In this capacity, Dr. Provitera teaches management at both the undergraduate and graduate level. In addition to Dr. Provitera’s academic credentials, he offers fifteen years of Wall Street corporate experience at various investment banks. In his last position at Mizuho Financial Group, he was an Assistant Vice President of Fixed Income Operations where he managed fourteen people.

Dr. Provitera’s current research pertains to management, management education, leadership, and teaching and learning. In addition, he frequently speaks on the interrelationship of both leadership and motivation. He has over 23 peer-reviewed publications and one magazine article. In October 2002, his article was the featured lead article in The Journal of Applied Management and Entrepreneurship for that issue. Dr. Provitera has received several awards, including an outstanding reviewer award at the Academy of Management national conference in Anaheim, California in August 2008. In the last 7 years, he has presented on more than 32 different occasions at national meetings, professional societies, organizations, seminars, universities, and schools. He also reviewed 12 textbooks or chapters of textbooks in management, leadership, human resource strategy, and finance for major publishing companies. In addition, Dr. Provitera is a reviewer for several journals and conferences but primarily he reviews for the Academy of Management annual conference for the organizational behavior, management education, management history, management and spirituality, and human resource management divisions.

In management and leadership education, Dr. Provitera developed a new case study that posits the application of leadership styles to various scenarios and he published a teaching and learning article that provides both direction and analysis for both teachers and students regarding learning and teaching styles. He published an article that provides clear direction for aspiring managers which included guidelines to enhance career growth and sustainability. Recently, he published an article in the form of a chapter on electronic-leadership for a Human Resource Encyclopedia. Most recently, he has had his latest co-authored article on teaching labor relations accepted for presentation at the National Academy of Management conference. Barry University awarded Dr. Provitera a mini-grant in which he ran over 200 seminars in motivation and leadership and awarded over 200 certificates of completion to the participants. In 2006, research from the mini-grant was published as a White Paper titled “Models of Engagement: Discussion Learning using Multimedia Software” and was distributed to all Adult and Continuing Education and Business School faculty, deans, and adjunct faculty.

Dr. Provitera is very active at the Academy of Management annual meetings. He has presented various research, facilitated and co-chaired doctoral professional development workshops, and created and attended several professional development workshops. He is also a certified leadership trainer for Situational Leadership® from the Center for Leadership Studies, Escondido, California. He was trained by Dr. Paul Hersey, who is a Behavioralist and well-known management trainer.

Dr. Provitera volunteers his time to the Kids and the Power of Work Program at elementary schools. In this capacity, he teaches business skills to fourth graders. He was appointed by the Dean of the School of Adult and Continuing Education (ACE) as the ACE Barry-Cares faculty representative. He is also on the advisory board for the Barry University MAA degree.

Dr. Provitera serves as a Subject Specialist for the Distance Education and Training Council (DETC) as site evaluator, graduate and undergraduate course evaluator, and overall program evaluation. The DETC is a global leader in distance learning accreditation.
