For the 13th consecutive year, the Department of Psychology showcased student research through their annual Student Research Forum and Luncheon, Wednesday, April 18th.

The event highlights student research through poster presentations, while giving students and colleagues the chance to network through a luncheon, paper sessions, a keynote address and educational games.

For the first time this year, part of the forum was sponsored by a grant from the Council on Undergraduate Research, which allowed the Psychology Department to award monetary prizes for the best undergraduate research posters. Psychology students Yvonne Stahl, Angelique Gutierrez, Dena Ballew, Devorah Susson, Tariqa Ackbarali, Celestia Marenco and Anna Sullivan were all recognized with these prizes.

In addition, the department used the event as an opportunity to award its annual Dr. Marie-Frances Desrosiers Scholarship, in honor of former associate professor of Psychology, Marie-Frances Desrosiers, who was killed in 2002. The annual scholarship is awarded to a Psychology major to commemorate her academic achievements, love and dedication to the community and emphasis on social responsibility.

This year’s winner, junior Danielle Jackman, currently holds a 4.0 GPA and plans to use her psychology degree to establish foundations for the homeless.

“Danielle is the perfect reflection of what Dr. Desrosiers brought to our lives,” said Dr. Lenore Szuchman, chair of the Psychology Department. “She will be a fine scholar who uses her education to better our lives.”

Over 70 students participated in the event, made up of students conducting research in the Psychology Department, students from senior symposiums and visiting students from Touro College South in Miami Beach. Keynote speaker and Barry graduate, Avidan Milevsky, PhD, also visited from Touro College, where he is currently chair of their Psychology Department.
