Administrative professionals from all over the state were recognized for their dedication to the university’s on-going mission, during the tenth annual Administrative Professionals Awards, Wednesday, April 25. Over 180 came together for the event, enjoying brunch, door prizes, a keynote address and recognizing the recipient of the 2007 Sister Jeanne O’Laughlin Administrative Professional Award.
Andrea Bello, from the School of Arts and Sciences, Department of Psychology received the award, honored for her dedication at Barry since 2001.
“She is not only determined and goal-oriented but also possesses a large and caring heart,” said Michelle Major-Sanabria, PhD, assistant professor of Psychology, in her nomination. “She is a good listener and will do whatever is in her power to help you in your time of need.”
The Sister Jeanne O’Laughlin Award is given annually to honor one administrative professional who is representative of all the excellent administrative professionals working at Barry University. The recipient is nominated and chosen for their support of Barry’s mission through their work ethic, leadership abilities, personal integrity and contributions to the university and/or community. Bello is the fourth winner of the award, receiving a plaque and a $1,000 award.
“All of our majors and grad students will tell you that Andrea is the soul of our office,” said Lenore Szuchman, PhD, chair of the Psychology Department.
Sister Linda Bevilacqua and the ECA also attended the brunch, thanking Administrative Professionals for their role in achieving the Barry mission.
“I’d like to know who’s running the university right now,” Sister Linda said in reference to the room full of administrative staff. “I want to thank you for modeling, not just for your colleagues, but for all of us, the core values we’re built on.”
Barry graduate, Louyse Poirier, PhD, gave the keynote address to promote professional development. She encouraged staff to look for clues of excellence in their work environments, especially during times of change. Poirier is currently vice president of Human Resources for Centex Construction, and has over 20 years of experience in all facets of Organization Development and Human Resources Management.
The administrative professionals' brunch began 10 years ago as a small breakfast on the Mission and Ministry deck, and has since grown to a university-wide event, bringing in administrative staff from schools and divisions throughout Barry’s main campus, and other sites throughout the state. For the first time this year, those unable to attend could watch the luncheon via a live feed over the internet.
The event is held in conjunction with national Administrative Professionals Day, celebrated on the third or fourth Wednesday in April to recognize the work of administrative staff. |
