The Alliance Theory of Homosexuality

By Emmerson Jean-Philippe

Research on human homosexuality is scarce within the psychological literature. For many researchers, the issues surrounding homosexuality are controversial and regarded as taboo. Dr. Frank Muscarella, Professor of Psychology at Barry University, is one of the few researchers investigating the evolutionary origin of homosexual behavior.

In particular, Dr. Muscarella has been refining his evolutionary theory on homosexual behavior, the alliance theory of homosexual behavior. Recently, the New York Times acknowledged this theory as one of the prominent theories on the topic of homosexual behavior and homosexuality.

Dr. Muscarella explained that exclusive homosexuality would be evolutionarily unproductive for people, because they cannot reproduce and pass their genes to the next generation which diminishes their chance for survival. Homosexual behavior, however, might enhance their chance of survival by guaranteeing protection and securing resources. Evidence for the adaptive nature of homosexual behaviors can be found in studies of chimpanzees in-group behaviors. The alliance theory of homosexual behavior captures the essence of evolution.
