Alumni Highlight - Michelle Major

Michelle Major is becoming a household name here at Barry University. However lest some readers are not up to speed with the latest at BU this is your opportunity to learn more about this illustrious Bahamian. Major came to BU as an undergraduate. After completing her BS she decided to stay on and earn her Masters in Psychology and Specialist in School Psychology. However, Major decided not to stop there; currently she is working on her dissertation to complete her PhD in Education Leadership. This Barry alumnus can also be found teaching both graduate and undergrad courses in both the education and psychology departments; she had been an adjunct for three years. Aside from these many accomplishments Major still finds time to work as a school psychologist in Palm Beach County. Major exclaimed that the aspects of her job she most prizes are working with children and parents, being part of the school, and seeing the outcome of the intervention plans she builds. While Major currently plans on finishing her PhD and working her much beloved position in West Palm, she has not ruled out one day becoming a fulltime professor, possibly at BU. As for the field of school psychology, Major hopes that some day, school psychologists will be perceived as member of the schools. Perhaps as a professor she could best contribute to pushing the field in this direction.

Major offers the following recommendation to school psychology students and interns:

“Go into your internship with the goal of exploring your weaknesses, take initiative, seek out populations and new tests that you have not been exposed to”.
