Recent Events in Psi Chi

Psi Chi has been keeping quite active and busy with numerous community service and campus projects. In October 2004, the chapter successfully participated in a “Trick or Treat for Unicef” fundraiser, in which nearly $200 was raised for the organization. Psi Chi members also managed a table at Barry’s annual Trick or Treat Event and passed out candy to local children. As Dr. Starratt said, “Active participation in Psi Chi provides member benefits that extend far beyond simply being able to add Psi Chi membership to one’s curriculum vitae. Psi Chi member participation in Barry University activities provides a visible link between the commitment to community service that is shared by Barry University and the field of psychology as a whole.”

Many Psi Chi members are planning on attending graduate programs after they graduate from Barry. As applying to graduate school can be overwhelming, chapter president, Melyssa Sueiro organized a few graduate school workshops, hoping to ease the transition from undergraduate to graduate school. Presenter Dr. Starratt, commented, “The sponsorship and development of departmental workshops, such as those we have offered in vita writing, letters of recommendation, writing personal statements and applying to graduate programs, benefit not only Psi Chi members, but all students in the department in ways that have lasting effects.”

Currently, the chapter has been participating in a “Name Those Fish Fundraiser,” with the hopes of naming the two newly acquired fish who live in the department’s conference room. Students and faculty are using spare change to vote for the name that they like the best.
