Recent Events in Psi Chi

In the Spring of 2005, Psi Chi’s beloved moderator, Dr. Gerene Starratt, moved on to other opportunities. As a result, Dr. Major Sanabria happily filled the position of Psi Chi moderator. This year, the chapter aimed to expand the Psi Chi membership and facilitate professional development across the student body. Reflecting back on the past year, Psi Chi has begun a tradition of surpassing all expectations!

At the beginning of the year, the chapter initiated a project by sending cards to a young girl diagnosed with cancer in Switzerland. October to May, members collected and delivered clothes to the Salvation Army.

In the pursuit of professional development, Psi Chi hosted a brown bag presentation in February in which Dr. Guillermo Wated presented his research on Accent as a Work-Stressor and its Relationship to Attitudinal and Health-Related Work Outcomes. Additionally, approximately 30% of the membership participated in poster and paper presentations across the state of Florida. Members presented their independent research projects at the Florida Academy of Sciences (FAS), Southeastern Psychological Association Meeting (SEPA), and Barry’s 12th Annual Psychology Forum. Additionally, two Psi Chi members were initiated into Sigma Xi, a national research honor society. Congratulations to Frantz Moise and Caitlin McGowan for their outstanding accomplishments!

Also this year, Psi Chi sponsored the “Name that Baby” project. Photos of faculty members were posted on the Psi Chi board and students were encouraged to fill out surveys in which they matched baby pictures to current faculty member photos. There was an overwhelming response rate and Psi Chi would like to congratulate Farrah Warner for successfully naming those babies!

In hopes of fostering a sense of community and partnership between members, Psi Chi’s Executive Board orchestrated a new type of Annual Induction Ceremony. A total of 11 new members were initiated in April and membership appears to be growing. Psi Chi would like to thank the faculty, students, and family members that attended the ceremony for their support.
In May, Psi Chi teamed up with Psychology Club to raise chapter funds with an “Affirmation Muffin” Sale. Students and faculty members purchased muffins for $1 and students delivered them to faculty and administrators across Barry’s campus. Students worked diligently on the project and profited over $300.00! Psi Chi and Psychology Club gained vast attention across campus and hope to continue the tradition in years to come!

As the semester ends, Psi Chi is in the midst of planning yet another eventful year. The Executive Board is already discussing submitting an article to Psi Chi’s national publication, “Eye on Psi Chi” regarding the chapter’s recent projects. Additionally, the membership is working on plans to volunteer for Habitat for Humanity. The future is looking bright and Psi Chi has many goals in sight. So if you are an old member who has been away for awhile or if you are interested in becoming a member, the Psi Chi membership welcomes you to take part in their journey to success!
