Born and raised in Germany, Dr. Andrea Allen attended the Universitaet Heidelberg before moving to the United States and subsequently earning a Bachelor’s degree in Psychology from the University of South Florida. Dr. Allen received her Ph.D. in Developmental Psychology from Florida International University and is a licensed therapist in the State of Florida.
Dr. Allen joined Barry University in 2005 and is an Assistant Professor of Behavioral Sciences. She also serves as the Academic Coordinator for Behavioral Sciences and Social Welfare Service ACE.
Dr. Allen’s area of research interests focus mainly on childhood anxiety disorders. As such, she has been involved in “Project Recovery,” a Florida program aimed at helping children cope in the aftermath of hurricanes. Recently, Dr. Allen has worked with mental health professionals in New Orleans in an effort to address anxiety and post traumatic stress in children after Hurricane Katrina. As a member of the Terrorism and Disaster Team of the University of Oklahoma’s Health Sciences Center, Dr. Allen collaborates with fellow researchers in the area of childhood responses to trauma.
Additionally, Dr. Allen conducts research at the Child and Family Psychosocial Research Center at Florida International University, with a particular interest in developing and evaluating treatments for childhood anxiety disorders and phobias.
