Susan Braunstein received her bachelor’s and master’s from the University of Louisville, Louisville, Kentucky and her Ed. D. from Florida Atlantic University. She taught English and Communications at a number of colleges and universities in Illinois, Washington State, and Florida and spent 10 years as a freelance journalist before coming to Barry. Her research interests center on internal and external communications in law enforcement agencies.

Dr. Braunstein has been lead researcher on a Department of Justice grant and has peer reviewed many law enforcement grants. She has received a number of awards including Teacher of the Year at Florida Institute of Technology, Jensen Beach and at Barry’s School of Adult and Continuing Education. She also has received numerous awards from law enforcement organizations including a board award for Public Information in 2005 from the International Association of Chiefs of Police and the Port St. Lucie Police Department 25th Anniversary Award of Gratitude in 2000. Earlier in her career, her writing received a Best in State award from the Associated Press for Best Radio Editorial.

Her publications include numerous articles, several textbook chapters, and two books. In 2006 the International Association of Chiefs of Police published Best Practices in Law Enforcement Public Information which was edited by Dr. Braunstein.

In her personal life Susan uses her communications skills to assist a local animal welfare organization.
