Dr. Nancy B. Masztal joined the Adrian Dominican School of Education as a Professor in the Graduate Reading Program in the fall of 2003.  From 1978 - 2003 she was at the University of Southern Mississippi (USM) – Gulf Coast where she taught undergraduate and graduate reading courses, and served for twelve years as Chair of the Division of Education and Psychology.  During her twenty-five years on the Gulf Coast of Mississippi Dr. Masztal worked with local schools in field based courses, grant supported projects and as a consultant with parents.  As an educator for over 30 years, Dr. Masztal has taught second, fifth and sixth grades in Miami-Dade Schools.  In addition, she has taught reading in Adult Basic Education and Adult Secondary Education programs in the Federal Correctional Institution in South Miami.

Dr. Masztal earned her Ph.D. and M.Ed. in Reading at the University of Miami, Coral Gables, Fl.  Her B.A. in English and speech is from Florida State University.  She enjoys collaborating with local schools and working with parent groups.  She is interested in teacher beliefs and practices; working with struggling readers; working with parents of young children on nurturing literacy and language; the use of literature in the development of literacy; and in writing grants to support educational projects.  Dr. Masztal is active in local, state, national, and international professional organizations.
