Course description:
The workshop will introduce students interested in the field of environmental science to fundamental aspects of field and lab research, including the conception, design, implementation, and analysis of data collection and experiments. The course will involve lectures, laboratory exercises, field exercises, and field trips. Some exercises will be conducted from a boat and will require the students to swim in shallow nearshore waters of Biscayne Bay. These exercises are not mandatory for the course. Transportation to all field sites will be provided by Barry University.
Evaluation of student progress: The final grade will be determined as follows:
- Participation/lab notebook: 70%
- Lab report: 15%
- Presentation: 15%
Late assignments will be penalized 10% per day, including weekends. Assignments will NOT be accepted via e-mail.
Attendance policy: Punctual attendance is required every day.
SNHS Grading Scale: There will be no extra credit.
A = 90-100
B = 80-89
C = 70-79
D = 60-69
F = 0-59
University Academic Dishonesty Policy: Plagiarism and cheating on assingments will not be tolerated. The instructor will adhere strictly to the academic dishonesty policy as stated in the Barry University undergraduate catalog.
Student Behavior Policy: All Barry students are expected to behave according to accepted norms that ensure a climate wherein all can exercise their right to learn. Disruptive behavior is not acceptable in the classroom. Students engaging in such behavior may be asked to leave or may be removed from the class by security personnel. Actions such as violence, shouting, using cell phones and/or beepers, using profanity, interrupting, and any other behavior that the instructor believes creates an unpleasant environment in the classroom will be grounds for withdrawal from the course, judicial proceedings and/or failure in the course.
