Earlier this year, Hallbergson-Lewis was chosen to represent the Sunshine State Conference on the NCAA Division II 40th Anniversary Tribute Team. Developed through a partnership with the Division II Conference Commissioners Association, the 40th Anniversary Tribute Team highlights one male and one female from each of the division’s 23 current conferences, plus two at-large nominees.

In the recently-released article, she talks about her experiences as an international NCAA Division II student-athlete, as well as her career since her days at Barry.

Barry's Isabela Miro then delivered a 7-5, 3-6, 6-1 win over Natasa Vukovic at No. 6 singles after the Bucs dropped the No. 2 singles match to pull Barry within 4-3.

Trailing 5-1 in the third set, Barry's Karina Goia battled brilliantly in winning four straight games to draw even at 5-5, despite being assessed a carryover point penalty from another singles match. But Armstrong's No. 17 Marlen Hacke pulled out a 6-2, 4-6, 7-5 win in the No. 4 singles flight to wrap it up.

It marked the second straight year Barry fell to Armstrong in the NCAA Championships -- last year in the semifinals.

The Buccaneers lost at Nos. 1 and 2 doubles, but Goia and Miro handled their business in beating Clara Perez and Vukovic, 8-4, at No. 3 pairs.

Fritschken finished the season with a 20-1 record. She won 18 straight matches to close the season, and was 4-1 against nationally-ranked opponents.

Barry finished the season with its second straight undefeated regular season, a fourth straight Sunshine State Conference title, South Region championship and fourth consecutive trip to the NCAA Championships. The Bucs have advanced to the site of the NCAA Finals 18 times in the program's history, including four in a row under coach Avi Kigel.

SURPRISE, Ariz. -- Barry University women's tennis team accomplished what it set out to do Wednesday -- win efficiently. The No. 1 Buccaneers swept No. 19 Midwestern State, 5-0, in the NCAA Championships Round of 16 at Surprise Tennis & Racquet Complex.

Efficiency was the name of the game on this day.

"Of course it helps a lot with your confidence, and it helps the team as well because you get off the quick," Barry freshman Emma Onila said after picking up a pair of victories. "It's a little strange to play here because the balls fly, so you have to adapt."

The Bucs (27-0) made all the necessary adjustments in this one, and now advance to the quarterfinals at 4 p.m. EST Thursday when they will meet No. 2 Armstrong Atlantic (27-1). Barry beat Armstrong, 5-4, in Miami Shores during the regular season.

Thursday's quarterfinal match can be seen live on the NCAA.com's Streaming Site.

"Tomorrow, I think the focus for us is going to be for us to win our doubles," Onila said. "We just have to play our best, try our best, and that's it."

Wednesday, the Bucs were on top of their game in pairs play. Elisabeth Abanda and Onila, the No. 8-ranked doubles team in the country, beat Sarita Adhikary and Lauren Pineda, 8-3, at the top flight. Linda Fritschken and Akemi Maehama were 8-2 winners over Kayla Casey and Madeline Schorlemmer at No. 2. Karina Goia and Isabela Miro beat Fatima Clementino and KynZee Watson, 3-0, at No. 3.

That put the Bucs ahead 3-0 entering singles play.

Fritschken made quick work of Casey, 6-1, 6-0, at No. 3 singles to move Barry within a point of clinching the match. Ranked 30th in the nation, Onila sealed the deal with a 6-2, 6-3 victory over Taylor Coffman, at No. 2.

Barry was up a set in the remaining four singles matches with Abanda leading at No. 1, Goia ahead at No. 4, Maehama up at No. 5 and Miro in front at No. 6.

"It's a great feeling," Onila said. "I just hope to continue (playing well), and hopefully we'll come through with a win."

It marks the second straight year Lopez has won the award.

"I was very excited last year," Lopez said. "With this being my second year winning the award, I think I'm more shocked this time than the first time."

A former All-American player at Barry, Lopez was named a full-time assistant in November. She has been an assistant coach in some of the Buccaneers' most storied teams in school history. In 2011, she served on a coaching staff that won the national championship. Last year, she coached the Bucs to an undefeated regular season and trip to the NCAA semifinals.

This year, she's helped steer the Buccaneers to its first No. 1 national ranking prior to the national championships, following another unbeaten regular season under the guidance of head coach Avi Kigel.

"It's been great to have the support of the administration," Lopez said. "Avi has been a great mentor for me. There's been many people that have guided me to where I am as a coach, and I am truly grateful for them. The experiences that I've had with some of the former and current players have helped shape me to the coach I am today."

Lopez has helped Barry to a 26-0 season this year, entering Wednesday's Round of 16 match against Midwestern State at the NCAA Championships.

"Obviously, we've had a great season," she said. "Our goal is always to accomplish those small little obstacles that we encounter throughout the season, with the big picture in mind. Our main goal is to win the national championship. That's the ultimate goal that we strive to accomplish when we meet with the players on the first day of school.

"It's a great accomplishment for myself. In this job, sometimes we forget to reward ourselves a little bit. For me, it's kind of a pat on the back to say, 'You're doing an OK job.' There's plenty of great assistant coaches out there that are doing a great job to inspire players. That's what I strive to do every day. I want my own players to think that I am the best coach that they have. That's what's most important."

All for One: Women's Tennis Prepares for Nationals

SURPRISE, Ariz. -- Barry University's No. 1-ranked women's tennis team will play No. 19 Midwestern State at 4 p.m. EST Wednesday in the NCAA Division II National Championships Round of 16 at Surprise Tennis & Racquet Center.

"I feel like as it gets closer to the tournament, we are getting focused and more excited," junior Akemi Maehama said. "And we get closer as a team to take care of each other."

Barry (26-0) took care of business to reach the site of the national finals for the 18th time in school history. Wednesday's match against Midwestern State (17-6) marks the first time the two schools will have met since the Bucs beat the Mustangs, 5-0, in the 2005 NCAA Championships Round of 16.

"Other teams need to know that we are willing to do whatever it takes to win," freshman Karina Goia said.

The Bucs won the 2011 national championship. They advanced to the national semifinals a year ago.

"Our record shows a really good side of us, but it doesn't mean everything," Maehama said. "We have to focus day by day. We have to focus on each match. I'm really excited, but I have to keep my feet on the earth so I can focus on my matches."

This is the first year Barry has been ranked No. 1 in the country prior to the national championships.

"It means a lot, and it's a really big accomplishment for all of us," Maehama said. "At the end of the day, though, it doesn't really matter what ranking you have. You just have to win."

Maehama is the lone returner from the 2011 NCAA Championship team, so she understands as well as anyone the magnitude of the remaining journey. On a team with just seven players, her words and leadership carry plenty of weight.

"I want them to know every single match counts, that everybody counts," Maehama said. "We have to give everything we have each day. This is it. This is the last tournament of the year. You don't get the opportunity to perform again this year.

"It's such a small team, but we have so much energy. The ceiling can't hold us. This is our moment. We will fight 'till it's over."

Kigel won the ITA National Coach of the Year in 2011. Lopez won the ITA National Assistant Coach of the Year last year.

"We are honored to receive this award," Kigel said. "We are working really hard, and it feels good to be appreciated by the ITA and other coaches."

The Buccaneers are 26-0 and ranked No. 1 in NCAA Division II. Barry plays No. 19 Midwestern State (17-6) in the NCAA Championships Round of 16 Wednesday in Surprise, Ariz.

"I am honored to have received this recognition," Lopez said. "I am very lucky to have a group of hardworking girls that challenge me on an everyday basis, and thankful to Avi for being a great mentor in helping me become a better coach in every aspect of the game."

Earlier this season, Kigel recorded his 100th career victory as a head coach.

The Buccaneers have gone unbeaten in the regular season for two straight years. This is the first year, however, Barry women's tennis was ranked No. 1 in the country prior to the national tournament.

Both are ranked No. 1 in the nation.

The Buccaneers women's team earned the top billing when the Intercollegiate Tennis Association national poll was released Wednesday. Barry's men's team became No. 1 Thursday when the ITA rankings went public. It is the first time in school history Barry men's and women's programs have been ranked No. 1 simultaneously.

"I think it's a very proud time for Barry University to have both its men and women at the top of the charts," Bucs men's coach George Samuel said. "It's a pat on the back for all the hard work they've done. I think they deserve that honor."

Barry's men (25-0) play No. 32 Northwood, Mich. (17-4) at 10 a.m. EST Wednesday in the Round of 16 at the NCAA Division II National Championships in Surprise, Ariz.

The Buccaneers women (26-0) meet No. 19 Midwestern State (17-6) at 4 p.m. EST Wednesday in the Round of 16 at Surprise Tennis & Racquet Complex.

This marks the first time Barry's women's team has been ranked No. 1 prior to the NCAA Championships in school history.

"We're very excited to be ranked No. 1," Bucs women's coach Avi Kigel said. "It's another stepping stone for us. It shows that we've been doing the right things. It shows that we've been playing the right schedule.

"The girls had to go through a little bit of adversity with only seven players. They were able to find ways to win. This is not the ultimate goal. The ultimate goal is to be No. 1 at the end of nationals."

The Buccaneer men's team concurs.

"It's more incentive to try to hold on to that ranking throughout the national tournament," Samuel said. "We're looking forward to next week."

MIAMI SHORES, Fla. -- Barry University women's tennis team withstood a marathon match from arch-rival Lynn Sunday to win the NCAA South Region Championship, 5-4, at Buccaneer Tennis Center.

The No. 2-ranked Buccaneers (26-0) advance to the NCAA Finals for a Round of 16 match against No. 27 Midwestern State (17-6) at 4 p.m. EST/1 p.m. Arizona May 8 in Surprise, Ariz.

"This one was a tough match, but finally we won," Barry freshman Karina Goia said after clinching the Bucs' victory with a 6-1, 5-7, 6-1 win over Alina Jane at No. 4 singles. "We're looking forward to nationals."

Goia, who admitted she tired in the second set, was determined in the third set, putting Jane away quickly when all the other matches had finished -- the team score knotted at 4-4.

"In the third set, I knew everything depended on me, and I got really motivated," Goia said. "It was good."

Goia and Isabela Miro were instrumental in the victory as well as the pair combined for a comeback No. 3 doubles victory over Jane and Andrea Berkova, winning 9-7. The Bucs tandem trailed 6-3 before winning the next three games to tie it up, 6-6. After Lynn's duo went ahead 7-6, Goia and Miro won the next two games, breaking the Fighting Knights' serve to take an 8-7 lead. The Bucs clinched it on Miro's serve.

That gave Barry a 2-1 lead after doubles.

Linda Fritschken and Kimmy Twelker picked up the Bucs' first point, winning their No. 2 doubles match over Kim Przeszlowski and Aleks Vukadinovic, 8-4.

Fritschken continued her dominant display of tennis, delivering a 6-1, 6-0 win over Przeszlowski at No. 3 singles. Ranked No. 33 in the nation, Fritschken improved to 18-1, and has won 16 straight matches.

Akemi Maehama also won her 16th consecutive match, beating Vukadinovic, 7-6 (7-1), 6-0, at No. 6 singles. Her victory moved Barry within a point of clinching, setting the stage for Goia.

"It's amazing," Goia said with a smile. "It's an amazing feeling."

The fifth-seed Fighting Knights (14-4) advance to play top-seeded Barry (25-0) in Sunday’s 9 a.m. championship match.

Rollins (13-6) played gutty tennis in taking a 2-1 lead after doubles. Following the Tars 8-0 No. 1 flight loss to Lynn’s No. 3-ranked Val Confalonieri and Ioana Ivan, Rollins responded with fortitude. The Tars No. 2 tandem of Ashley Loft and Lisa Loft battled for an 8-6 victory over Kim Przeszlowski and Aleks Vukadinovic to knot the match at 1-1. Rollins No. 3 duo of Carli Davis and Mariana Salvador then overcame a huge test to pull out a 9-8 (7-5) win over Alina Jane and Andrea Berkova.

Then came singles play, where Lynn reeled off four straight wins in convincing fashion to wrap it up. The 13th-ranked Ivan rolled to a 6-1, 6-0 No. 2 singles victory over Ashley Rosenberg to tie the match at 2-2. Berkova defeated Ashley Loft, 6-0, 6-2, at No. 5 for a 3-2 Fighting Knights lead.

Confalonieri, the fourth-ranked singles player in the country, beat Elissa DeCampli, 6-2, 6-0, at No. 1 to move Lynn within a point of clinching. Vukadinovic clinched the match with a 6-0, 6-4 victory over Emma Wookey at No. 6.

Women's Tennis Advances to NCAA South Region Finals

MIAMI SHORES, Fla. – Top-seeded and host Barry University women’s tennis team beat eighth-seeded Stillman, 5-1, in the NCAA Division II South Region 1 semifinals Saturday at Buccaneer Tennis Center.

The Buccaneers (25-0) advance to Sunday’s 9 a.m. championship match against fifth-seeded Lynn (14-4). It will be an all-Sunshine State Conference finals match to decide which team moves on to meet Midwestern State (17-6) in the Round of 16 at the NCAA Championships May 8-11 in Surprise, Ariz.

Barry, the lone unbeaten Division II team left in the country, swept the doubles matches before 41st-ranked Emma Onila and 33rd-ranked Linda Fritschken both delivered straight-set singles victories without giving up a game to clinch the victory for the Buccaneers. Onila defeated Nair Tolomeo, 6-0, 6-0, at No. 2. Fritschken beat Veronika Kalugina, 6-0, 6-0, at No. 3.

The Buccaneers No. 11-ranked pairs team of Elisabeth Abanda and Onila beat Litia Godinet and Kalugina, 8-0, at the top flight. Fritschken and Kimmy Twelker defeated Nair Tolomeo and Angela Corredor, 8-1, at No. 2. Karina Goia and Akemi Maehama swept Whitney Horner and Rosana Mederios, 8-0, at the third flight.

Barry defaulted the No. 6 singles flight after Twelker was removed from singles play.

Sunday's match marks the second time in an 18-day span the Bucs and Fighting Knights will have met at Buccaneer Tennis Center this year. Barry beat Lynn, 8-1, on April 10.

That's what Barry University women's tennis team achieved in winning its fourth straight Sunshine State Conference Championship in Saturday's 5-1 win over Saint Leo.

It marked the university's 50th SSC title in all sports.

"It feels great," Bucs freshman Elisabeth Abanda said after beating Coraline Pesenti, 6-0, 6-2, at No. 1 singles. "When you expect it too much, your level goes down. We knew Saint Leo would show up."

That the seventh-ranked Lions (17-5) did in causing fits for the second-ranked Buccaneers (24-0) in pairs play. After Abanda and Emma Onila, the 11th-ranked doubles team in NCAA Division II, beat Maria Benkirane and Pauline Helgesson, 8-4, at the No. 1 flight in a match the Bucs had to come back from early, Saint Leo kept Barry on its heels in the other two matches.

Karina Goia and Isabela Miro were down 4-3 at No. 3 doubles to Pesenti and Adrianna Daszkiewicz, but Miro hammered away a winner at the net to tie it at 4-4. The Bucs tandem won another game to pull ahead, but the Lions duo bounced back to take a 7-6 lead.

Both teams swapped the next two games, giving Saint Leo an 8-7 lead. But Goia and Miro won the 16th game to send the match to a tiebreaker. Barry's pair charged to a 5-2 lead before putting the Lions duo away, 7-2 in the tiebreaker. That gave the Bucs a 2-0 lead.

Linda Fritschken and Kimmy Twelker trailed, 4-1, to Emily Singleton and Laura Kemkes at No. 2 doubles, but the Bucs duo won three of the next four games to pull within 5-4. Fritschken and Twelker tied the match at 6-6 before the Lions pair won the next game. When Fritschken pounded away a ball at the net after a long rally in the 14th game, the Bucs knotted the match at 7-7.

Singleton and Kemkes won the next game to move within one of clinching, but Fritschken ripped a backhand down the line to send the match into a tiebreaker. But Kemkes and Singleton withstood the Bucs duo in the match in the tiebreaker, winning, 7-4, to cut the deficit to 2-1.

"I think we were all strong in doubles," Abanda said. "We lost just one doubles match in three days, so that's pretty good."

The one loss, of course, was decided in a tiebreaker.

Onila, ranked 41st in the nation, delivered Barry's first singles victory when she made quick work of Helgesson to win the No. 2 flight, 6-0, 6-2. That moved the Bucs within two points of clinching.

Twelker, who labored through another physical battle following an arduous doubles match, put the Buccaneers ahead 4-1 with a 6-0, 6-3 No. 5 victory over Singleton.

"I was fighting some injuries, and I'm constantly in a lot of pain," Twelker said. "I could hardly walk after doubles. (Head coach) Avi (Kigel) told me to give my best. I gave my best, and then I won my match. It feels awesome. I didn't expect that my match was that important."

Still, Barry needed another victory to secure another league crown. In many ways, it was a matter of semantics. The Bucs were up a set in each of the other singles matches. Akemi Maehama won the opening set, 6-2, over Phoebe Di Leo at No. 6. Goia claimed the first set, 6-3, in the No. 4 flight with Benkirane. Fritschken, ranked 33rd in the country, won the first set against Daszkiewicz, 6-2.

But Abanda, the 28th-ranked singles player in the country, rose to the occasion, putting away the 37th-ranked Pesenti in straight sets.

"It was a whole completely different world for me," Abanda said, despite coming off the high from the doubles win. "I had played against this girl before, so I knew how to play her. This match, I was really patient with my game. That's what I was pleased with, and being able to control the match."

The Buccaneers control their destiny as they begin the NCAA National Tournament, where they are all but certain to host one of the two South Regionals at Buccaneer Tennis Center in Miami Shores next Saturday and Sunday. The NCAA pairings will be revealed Tuesday night.

"We train really, really hard, every single girl," Twelker said. "(Assistant coach) Maria (Lopez) and Avi push us. It's just an awesome feeling. It's just amazing to know the hard work pays off."

The No. 2-ranked Bucs (23-0) advance to Saturday's 9 a.m. championship match against No. 7 Saint Leo.

After the Buccaneers swept the doubles, Isabela Miro delivered the first singles point when she defeated Ashley Loft, 6-1, 6-4, at No. 6 singles. Thirty-third ranked Linda Fritschken sealed the deal for a second straight day when she beat Carli Davis, 6-1, 6-1, at No. 3 singles.

Barrry's No. 3 doubles team of Karina Goia and Miro blanked Mariana Salvador and Davis, 8-0, for the Bucs' first point. Fritschken and Kimmy Twelker were 8-1 winners over Lisa Loft and Ashley Loft at No. 2. Eleventh-ranked Elisabeth Abanda and Emma Onila completed the sweep with an 8-3 victory over Elisa DeCampli at the top flight.

The No. 2 nationally-ranked Buccaneers (22-0) advance to Friday’s 9 a.m. semifinals. No. 21-ranked Nova fell to 7-12.

One postseason win tucked away.

“It helps because the regular season is now over, and you have to practice hard, you have to keep your shape,” sophomore Linda Fritschken said after winning both her doubles and singles matches and securing the Bucs’ clinching fifth point. “It’s the best preparation for nationals.”

While that’s still a ways away, the Buccaneers handled their business in beginning defense of their SSC title – an accomplishment they’ve been blessed to own for the past three years. Barry swept the doubles in relatively convincing fashion.

Fritschken and Kimmy Twelker defeated Austin Lavallii and Sabrina Kierberg, 8-1, at No. 2. Karina Goia and Isabela Miro were 8-3 winners over Luisa Pintado and Linda Kornienko at No. 3. Eleventh-ranked Elisabeth Abanda and Emma Onila beat Alexandra Johansson and Charlotte Cote, 8-2, at No. 1.

The Bucs were the first team during the quarterfinal round to complete doubles play, and the first to move onto the semifinals.

“For our team to finish the match before any other team shows how prepared we are and how focused we are at winning everything that comes our way,” said Onila, who secured the Bucs’ first singles victory.

Ranked 41st in the country, Onila defeated Johansson, 6-0, 6-2, at No. 2 singles.

“My confidence level has gotten better, and I felt like all my shots were on point,” Onila said. “I think I’m an all-court player.”

Ranked No. 33, Fritschken defeated Carlee Rizzolo, 6-1, 6-1, at No. 3.

“I was really focused because now I know it’s really important to keep the match as short as possible,” Fritschken said. “In the postseason, you’re trying save energy for the rest of the season. I’m really satisfied with my game. I would feel comfortable at every position right now.

“I’ve really improved my forehand. My backhand is one of my best shots, and I always trust in it, but now I can rely on my forehand. That gives me a lot more opportunities to go to the net to finish the point.”

Barry was up a set in each of the bottom half of the singles flights when Fritschken sealed the deal on Day 1 in Boca.

“I’m proud of my team,” Onila said, “and we hope to continue to playing at a high level as we are right now.”

"I like the way I played because I was aggressive, staying in the point and being patient," Abanda said. "I'm happy that I was able to get the recognition. It's nice when people give credit when credit is due. It's an honor, and I feel like I deserved it."

Abanda won the season's first Player of the Week honor, and put a bow on the end of the regular season with the last weekly award.

"I would've liked to have played better during the middle of the season because that would have meant I had a good season from start to finish," she said. "But I'm motivated to keep working hard and playing well during the postseason."

The match will not be made up.

Ranked No. 2 in NCAA Division II, Barry (21-0) went unbeaten for the second straight year during the regular season, and now turns its focus to the Sunshine State Conference Championships, beginning with Thursday's 9 a.m. quarterfinal match when the top-seeded Buccaneers meet eighth-seeded Nova Southeastern at South County Regional Park in Boca Raton.

The Bucs' No. 2 doubles team of Linda Fritschken and Kimmy Twelker breezed to an 8-0 win. Karina Goia and Akemi Maehama were 8-2 winners at No. 3, while Elisabeth Abanda and Emma Onila won 8-4 at No. 1.

Florida Tech is serving as the host for this year's tournament. The SSC is partnering with the Palm Beach County Sports Commission in hosting the event at South County Regional Park.

Barry has clinched the top seed in the women's bracket, having rolled to a perfect 21-0 overall record this spring, including an 8-0 slate against conference opponents. The Buccaneers will face eighth-seeded Nova Southeastern in quarterfinal action on Thursday, April 18, at 9 a.m.

The Sharks finished the regular season with a 7-11 overall record and 2-6 SSC mark. Florida Tech (14-8 overall) also posted a 2-6 conference record, but the Panthers took the No. 7 seed by virtue of a 7-2 win over the Sharks in the teams' regular-season meeting.

As such, No. 7 Florida Tech will face off with No. 2 Saint Leo at 11:30 a.m. on Thursday. Saint Leo has tallied a 14-4 overall record and 6-1 SSC mark with one conference match remaining against Eckerd on Friday afternoon. Nevertheless, the Lions have already secured the No. 2 seed regardless of that outcome, having defeated third-seeded Lynn 5-4 in a regular-season contest.

No. 3 Lynn (14-3, 6-2 SSC) will face No. 6 Tampa (14-5, 3-5 SSC) at 9 a.m. on Thursday.

The other 9 a.m. women's quarterfinal will feature No. 4 Rollins vs. No. 5 Florida Southern. The Tars (14-4) and Moccasins (15-5) both collected a 4-4 SSC record, but Rollins took the higher seed due to a 5-4 decision over Southern in the teams' regular-season match.

Thursday's quarterfinal winners will advance to the women's semifinals, which will be played at 9 a.m. on Friday. Quarterfinal losers will compete in a backdraw bracket on Friday.

Barry also rolled to the top seed in the men's bracket. The Buccaneers have chalked an unblemished 20-0 overall record and 6-0 conference mark. The Bucs will enjoy a quarterfinal bye.

Lynn secured the No. 2 seed with a 14-5 overall record and 5-1 SSC slate. The Fighting Knights will tangle with No. 7 Eckerd at 11:30 a.m. in Thursday's quarterfinal round. The Tritons have one SSC match remaining against Saint Leo on Friday afternoon, but the outcome of the match will not impact their seed.

Similarly, Saint Leo has secured the No. 3 seed regardless of its outcome versus the Tritons on Friday afternoon. Heading into that match, the Lions have posted a 13-4 overall mark and a 3-2 conference record. They have secured the third seed by virtue of a 5-4 win over Rollins in the teams' regular-season meeting.

As such, No. 3 Saint Leo will face off with No. 6 Florida Tech (11-10, 1-5) at 1:30 p.m. on Thursday. No. 4 Rollins (11-6, 3-3 SSC) will play No. 5 Florida Southern (13-8, 2-4 SSC) in the other men's quarterfinal at 11:30 a.m.

Thursday's winners will play in Friday's men's semifinals at 11:30 a.m. The losers of the Lynn/Eckerd and Saint Leo/Florida Tech matches will play each other in a Friday backdraw match. The loser of the Rollins/Florida Southern contest will not play again until Saturday's final day of action.

South County Regional Park is located at 11200 Park Access Road, Boca Raton, FL. Admission is free to all matches of the 2013 SSC Tennis Championships.

The No. 2-ranked Buccaneers (21-0, 8-0 SSC) completed a perfect regular season in the conference with Wednesday's victory over the No. 8 Fighting Knights. The Bucs host NAIA No. 17 St. Thomas at 10 a.m. Saturday in the regular season finale.

Barry plays in the SSC Championships next Thursday-Saturday at South County Regional Park in Boca Raton, Fla., entering the league tournament as the top seed.

"It's always a tough match when we play Lynn," Barry head coach Avi Kigel said. "They're always one of the best teams in the country."

It started with nifty doubles play as Barry was at its best. The Buccaneers No. 1 doubles team of Elisabeth Abanda and Emma Onila, ranked No. 11 in NCAA Division II, knocked off third-ranked Valentine Confonfalonieri and Ioana Ivan, 8-5, in the final pairs match to be completed. That gave Barry a 3-0 lead.

"Lynn's No. 1 doubles is ranked No. 3 in the country for a reason," Kigel said. "We knew they were a very strong team. But we also knew that our No. 1 doubles team is very strong, and if we play the way we are capable of playing that we would have a good chance to win. It was close, but we were able to get the 'W' at the end."

Barry's No. 2 tandem of Linda Fritschken and Kimmy Twelker rolled to an 8-2 win over Ana Kriz and Aleks Vukadinovic for the Buccaneers' first point. Isabela Miro and Karina Goia upped the Bucs' lead to 2-0 with an 8-3 victory over Kim Przeszlowski and Alina Jane at the third flight.

"We got off to a really good start, being up 3-0 after doubles," Kigel said, "and we just kept our momentum going in singles."

Twelker picked up a win over Kriz, who retired with the Buccaneers' freshman leading 3-0 in the first set. That extended Barry's lead to 4-0. Ranked 33rd in the country, Fritschken sealed the team victory with a 6-1, 6-1 over Przeszlowski at No. 3 singles.

Leading 1-0 in the second set, Fritschken craftily mixed backhand with cross-court shots to chase the aggressive and athletic Przeszlowski around the court to take the next two games. Przeszlowski remained aggressive and ran down ball after ball, eventually winning a game. But with Fritschken leading 4-1 in the second set, the Bucs sophomore sewed the match away by taking the final two games.

"She was playing very smart, moving her side to side," Barry assistant coach Ana Maria Zuleta said. "She was wearing her out. As the match wore on, Linda increased the pace to finish the point faster. By increasing the pace, she got easier shots to go for winners to close up the match. Linda has the game to speed up and place shots.

"Her opponent was really good. She was defensive. Linda got a little bit more tired with those long rallies. But she played really smart, strong and aggressive."

Akemi Maehama posted a 6-1, 6-3 victory over Vukadinovic at No. 6. Goia gave the Bucs their fourth singles win when she beat Jane, 6-3, 6-2, at No. 4.

Following Onila's 6-1, 6-1 loss to the 13th-ranked Ivan at No. 2, Abanda put a bow on the Bucs victory with a signature win at the top flight. Ranked 28th in the country, Abanda beat the fourth-ranked Confalonieri, 6-4, 6-3, at No. 1.

"She just played a very solid match," Kigel said of Abanda, who has beaten the top two-ranked singles players in the South Region in this, her first, NCAA season. "She was aggressive with all of her shots. She kept pressuring Valentine the whole time, without any letdowns.

"We always knew that Bess could play at that level, and even better. She's had a little bit of ups and downs in the last four or five matches, but today she had a very solid performance. We knew that she is capable of playing at this level, which she needed to beat a really good player like Valentine. Elisabeth just needs to stay aggressive because that's her game."

Onila, ranked No. 41 in the country, had little resistance in a 6-1, 6-2 No. 1 singles victory over Garcia, who is ranked 40th. Rankned 28th, Abanda got back on the winning track with a 6-2, 6-0 win over Wladimirski at No. 2.
The second-ranked Bucs (18-0, 5-0 SSC) were set to take on their arch-rivals, the eighth-ranked Lynn Knights (12-2, 5-1 SSC) at the Buccaneer Tennis Center on Monday, but heavy rains in the Miami Shores area washed out the match.

The match is re-scheduled for Wednesday, Apr. 10 at 3:00 pm.

Women's Tennis Moves up to No. 2

MIAMI SHORES, Fla. -- Barry University women's tennis team is ranked No. 2 in NCAA Division II, according to the Intercollegiate Tennis Association poll released Wednesday.

The poll was compiled with records prior to last weekend's match against No. 1 Armstrong Atlantic. Barry (18-0) beat Armstrong, 5-4, to end the Pirates' 43-match win streak at Buccaneer Tennis Center.

The Pirates remained No. 1 in this month's poll. The next Division II poll is not scheduled to be released until May 1.

Barry jumped from two spots in the poll, having been ranked No. 4 last month. The Bucs were ranked No. 5 in the preseason.

Freshman Elisabeth Abanda is ranked No. 28 in singles. Sophomore Linda Fritschken is 33rd, and freshman Emma Onila is 41. Abanda and Onila are No. 11 as a doubles team.

Fritschken (Berlin, Germany) picked up a doubles win and a singles victory as the No. 4 Buccaneers downed two NCAA Division II top-10 opponents. In a 7-0 win over No. 9 California (Pa.), Fritschken joined Kimmy Twelker for a 6-3, 6-3 doubles win over Alexandra Borgenhoff and Ramona Czakon. Fritschken then tallied a No. 3 singles win in a 5-4 upset over No. 1 Armstrong Atlantic, which ended the defending national champion Pirates' 43-match win streak. Fritschken, who is ranked No. 19 in Division II singles, posted a 7-6 (7-4), 6-2 win over No. 14 Marlen Hacke.

Ranked No. 4 entering the match, Barry (18-0) will likely become the No. 1 team in the country. A new poll is scheduled to be released next week, however Friday’s match may not be included in that poll. Another poll will be released in April. NCAA Division II tennis releases new rankings once a month.

“It’s a great feeling,” Buccaneers coach Avi Kigel said. “We always know that playing Armstrong … they’re always good. We have to come prepared.”

That the Bucs did, winning two of the three doubles matches en route to handing the Pirates (14-1) their first loss since Barry beat them in the 2011 NCAA semifinals. Barry’s Karina Goia and Isabelo Miro secured the first point with an 8-1 victory over Clara Perez and Natasa Vukovic at No. 3 doubles. Goia’s ace capped the match.

Armstrong’s No. 6-ranked Marlen Hacke and Olga Kalodzitsa beat Linda Fritschken and Kimmy Twelker, 8-2, at No. 2 doubles. It was the Buccaneer pair’s first loss this season.

Barry’s Elisabeth Abanda and Emma Onila gutted out an 8-6 win over No. 1-ranked Barbora Krtickova and Aleksandra Filipovski at the No. 1 flight. It improved the Bucs’ top duo’s record to 4-0 against nationally-ranked opponents and 14-2 overall this year.

Following a pair of Pirates singles wins at the Nos. 4 and 2 flights, 19th-ranked Fritschken defeated 14th-ranked Hacke, 7-6 (4), 6-4, at No. 3 singles to even the match at 3-3. Akemi Maehama defeated Jessica Gardefjord, 6-3, 6-4, at No. 6 singles to put the Buccaneers ahead, 4-3. Tied 3-3 in the second set, Maehama’s sticktoitiveness following a long rally paid dividends as she chased down a ball into the corner and sent a forehand past Gardefjord to win the game to take a 4-3 lead. She won two of the last three to improve to 15-1 this season.

“Literally, one word … ‘Happy,’” Maehama said. “I knew I needed to win to keep up with the team, and keep up the girls’ motivation.”

Twelker, who had not played a singles match in 16 days since the Bucs’ trip to Abilene, Texas, delivered in a big way. She beat 13th-ranked Kalodzitsa, 6-4, 7-6 (4), at No. 5 singles to clinch the win for the Bucs.

“I knew that my match was an important one,” Twelker said, “so I was fighting for my team, for myself, and I finally won it.”

Barry’s Emma Onila overcame a 6-2 first-set loss to the eighth-ranked Filipovski with a 7-6 (4) win in the second set to send the match to a third set. Filipovski battled back to win the final set, 7-5, to take the No. 1 singles point, after the team verdict had already been decided.

“I’m very happy with the way we came out with good energy,” Kigel said. “We kind of took it to them in doubles. We were able to pull it through. The doubles point is always very crucial. We’ve been playing good doubles the whole year. Armstrong has three very good doubles, as we do, so we were able to get two very important points.”

Maehama’s win loomed large as the match ran its course.

“Akemi’s very important for this team,” Kigel said. “She knew this year it was her chance to make a significant impact. Fighting is her signature way of playing, and she came up big today.”

Twelker, who’s battled multiple injuries this season, was coming off a loss in her last singles match in Texas. To seal it for the Bucs, despite battling the adversity she’s faced this season, was monumental.

“Kimmy’s huge for us in both singles and doubles,” Kigel said. “We had to be careful with how much she could play (earlier this year). We’re going to need her. She’s going to be expected to play singles and doubles the rest of the year.”

Every Buccaneer contributed to one of the five points necessary for clinching the victory.

“That’s a must when you play a team like Armstrong,” Kigel said. “That’s the only way we can compete against the top teams.”

“I know it’s going to be an exciting match to watch, to play,” said Maehama, a junior women’s tennis player from Tokyo, Japan.

No. 4 Barry University (17-0) hosts No. 1 Armstrong Atlantic (14-0) in a big-stakes women’s tennis match 10 a.m. Friday at Buccaneer Tennis Center. The Pirates beat the Bucs, 5-2, in last year’s NCAA semifinals in Louisville on their way to the NCAA championship.

Armstrong Atlantic’s last loss was a 5-3 setback to Barry in the NCAA semifinals on May 13, 2011 in Altamonte Springs, Fla. The Buccaneers beat the Pirates, 6-3, in the regular season earlier that year in Miami Shores.

But this year is a different season, and Armstrong is riding a 43-match winning streak, dating back to the 2011 NCAA semifinals.

“I know it’s going to be tough,” said Maehama, who was a freshman when the Bucs handed the Pirates their last loss. “Since we have so many new girls, we know we have to be ready for anything that’s to come.”

The Bucs and Pirates both beat No. 3 Abilene Christian earlier this season, giving each team a common thread to the paths that are about to cross Friday morning. Barry is 43-4 in doubles play this season. Armstrong is 38-4. The Pirates are 79-5 in singles matches for a .940 winning percentage. The Buccaneers are 75-12 for an .862 percentage.

Game on. Match on.

“I don’t really look at records or scores. I just want to beat them,” Maehama said. “We have a really, really strong team. I have so much faith in our doubles. This team, we are really solid. That helps a lot to know that we have really strong doubles. Also singles, we are pretty strong, too.

“We are really pumped on the court, no matter who we play. The attitude is always really good. We just need to bring it. If we give our all, we’re going to do just fine.”

NET NOTE: Be sure to watch NBC-6's Sports Final 11:30 p.m. Sunday night as sports reporter Courtney Fallon will air a piece on longtime Barry tennis coach George Samuel's career achievements.
Abanda, who battled illness earlier in the season, overcame 29 unforced errors in the first set in a big comeback win over No. 41 Lucie Rey, 7-6 (5), 6-1.

"I really had to start fresh, and not look at the score," Abanda said, compartmentalizing her approach from the 5-0 deficit. "I had to play to win, and not to lose. I was trying to be more patient, and it worked so I kept doing the same thing."

Abanda won six straight games after finding herself down 5-Love in the first set. Rey won the next game to send it to a first-set tiebreaker. But Abanda recollected herself in the tiebreaker to take the opening set.

"She seemed to be getting really nervous, so I thought to myself, 'If I stick to it, I can win this first set,'" said Abanda, who produced five winners in that set.

Abanda fired off one of her five aces in the match to take a 3-1 lead in the second set. Abanda capitalized on Rey's double fault to win the fifth game before wrapping up the match by winning the last two games.

"I feel like I have more confidence, and if that situation will reproduce, I can look back on that match and say, 'I did it. I can come back from 5-0 and win the set,'" said Abanda, who committed 11 unforced errors in the second set. "It's been technical. I wasn't really playing my game, and I really don't want it to be a habit. I want to get back to my game."

Emma Onila beat No. 31 Lucie Sipkova, 6-2, 6-2, at No. 1 singles. She is now 3-1 against ranked opponents. Karina Goia swept Maxime Colen, 6-0, 6-0, at No. 3 singles to improve to 14-0.

Akemi Maehama beat Elizabeth Guy, 6-1, 6-0, at No. 4 singles. Maehama wore down Guy with her patented looping volleys and eventual putaway winners.

Linda Fritschken and Kimmy Twelker won the only doubles match of the day, collecting two points for the Bucs for the second time in as many completed matches. The Bucs duo, who remain unbeaten together, defeated Alexandra Borgenhoff and Ramona Czakon, 6-3, 6-3, at the No. 1 pairs flight.

The Bucs (17-0) will host No. 1 and defending NCAA champion Armstrong Atlantic (14-0) 10 a.m. Friday at Buccaneer Tennis Center.

Division II No. 4 Barry led 3-0 following doubles action before rain halted the match. The match will not be continued.

Barry's No. 1 doubles team of Elisabeth Abanda and Emma Onila beat Jordan Brewer and Gabby Devlin, 8-6. The Buccaneers' No. 2 doubles team of Linda Fritschken and Kimmy Twelker beat Jen Newman and Zoe Pangalos, 8-1. The Bucs' No. 3 team of Karina Goia and Isabela Miro were 8-5 winners over Caroline Richman and Safi Aly.

None of the singles matches were completed.

Sunday, she and her Barry women’s tennis teammates were full of “Love” in a pair of victories at Buccaneer Tennis Center.

The No. 4-ranked Buccaneers beat Oklahoma Christian, 5-Love, in a morning match before wrapping up the day with a 6-1 victory over NCAA Division I Rutgers in the afternoon.

“I think this is the first match since January that I was feeling better, physically,” said Miro, who won two singles match and one doubles match in dominant fashion. “I found my game today.”

Miro and Karina Goia beat Oklahoma Christian’s No. 3 pair of Angie Torres Quezada and Rebecca Aguilar Dominguez, 8-Love.

“From the beginning of the season, we have watched them grow as a team,” Bucs assistant coach Maria Lopez said of Miro and Goia. “They’re starting to complement each other’s game. They communicate well on the court. It’s starting to work better and better each match.”

Miro and Goia are 9-1 as a doubles team this season.

“I always have fun playing doubles,” Miro said. “Karina is always up. She brings me up, so you can see the results.”

With the support of family in town this weekend, Miro beat Aguilar, 6-Love, 6-Love, at No. 6 singles. She also defeated Rutgers’ Lindsay Balsamo, 6-Love, 6-4, at No. 5 singles.

“I was feeling really good with my forehand today, and my serve was much better today,” Miro said. “I haven’t been serving really well, but today my serve was really good. The serve is half of the game.”

In the second set against Balsamo, Miro trailed 4-3 before winning the next three games to close out the match.

“My legs stopped moving because I was tired,” she said, the exhaustion of her third match starting to take its toll.

The Buccaneers (16-0) wore out the Eagles and Scarlet Knights, however. Elisabeth Abanda and Emma Onila beat OCU’s Barbora Bozkova and Gisela Castany, 8-3, at No. 1 doubles. The Bucs top pairs partners led 6-1 before their serve was broken during a stretch the Eagles duo won two straight games to draw within 6-3. But Onila and Abanda won the last two games to secure the match.

Linda Fritschken and Kimmy Twelker beat Oklahoma Christian’s Maryfer Abreu Roman and Gabriela Carrillo, 8-1, at No. 2 doubles. Barry’s duo played aggressive tennis, finishing points consistently at the net.

“It was very hard for the other team to find any weaknesses,” Lopez said of her No. 2 doubles team’s effort.

Fritschken and Twelker also beat Rutgers’ Lindsey Kayati and Mariam Zein, 6-2, 6-Love, in the only doubles match of the afternoon session in a format where doubles counted as two points and five singles matches each counted as one.

Ranked No. 19 in the country, Fritschken dusted off Abreu, 6-1, 6-Love, at No. 3 singles to help seal the deal against the Eagles.

“They all did the right things from the beginning in doubles,” Lopez said. “They were moving well. The girls just came out with the right heads. They did all the right things today.”

Onila won her No. 2 singles match over Rutgers’ Gina Li, 6-3, 6-2, to improve to 13-1. Down 1-0 in the first set, Onila mixed up her shots, while battling wind issues, to take a 3-1 lead. Li won the next game to cut it to 3-2. But Onila won the next two games, breaking Li’s serve, to go ahead, 5-2. After Li won the next game to draw within two, Onila finished off the first set.

“I had to play with more variety,” Onila said. “I felt confident on the court.”

With the score tied 2-2 in the second set, Onila chased down a ball into the corner and ripped a backhand down the line for a winner to take a 3-2 lead. It was a point during which Li had three putaway chances, but Onila’s fortitude won out. The Bucs freshman from Bucharest, Romania, who celebrated her birthday a day earlier, won the next three games to seal the match.

“It feels good because you keep your confidence,” Onila said, bouncing back from her only college singles loss. “It’s a process. Everything is a process.”

The Buccaneers processed two more singles wins against the Scarlet Knights as Goia weathered the storm in a 6-3, 6-4 duel with Stefania Balasa at No. 3. Akemi Maehama defeated Noor Judeh, 7-6 (7-1), 6-Love, at No. 4.

Ahead 3-Love in the second set, Maehama and Judeh battled to deuce before the Bucs junior from Tokyo, Japan, won some close points to take a 4-0 lead. Tied 30-30 in the fifth game, Maehama won the last two points, following extended rallies, to take a 5-0 lead. Maehama closed out the final game to give Barry its fifth of the match.

“I think everybody’s playing really good tennis,” Miro said. “We have a strong lineup, one through six, and we have fun playing for the team. We are really good friends, so we have fun playing for the team.”

In the process, Barry’s No. 4-ranked women’s tennis team kept rolling, following Thursday’s win over NAIA No. 2 Auburn Montgomery, 7-2.

Goia beat Chanel Cunningham, 6-2, 6-1, at No. 3 singles to remain perfect this year at 12-0.

“I feel my game better,” Goia said. “I didn’t feel my game before because I was pushing it. Now I’m starting to play better.”

Fritschken, ranked 19th in NCAA Division II, beat her second top 3-ranked opponent in an eight-day span after dispatching No. 2 Tiffany William, 6-3, 6-1, at No. 2 singles. Last week, she beat the third-ranked singles player in Division II in Abilene, Texas.

“When I became too defensive, she became more aggressive,” Fritschken said of William. “On the one hand, I had to play with more patience, but not too defensive. I'm happy because my opponents have become stronger. I have to be more focused. I become stronger when my opponents are stronger.”

Akemi Maehama had command of her game in a 6-2, 6-1 victory over Maria Vargas at No. 4 singles. Isabela Miro used steady, poised tennis to defeat Hagar Caro, 6-3, 6-2, at No. 5 singles. Kimmy Twelker picked up a forfeit win at No. 6 singles when the Warhawks did not field an opponent in that flight.

The Buccaneers 18th-ranked tandem of Fritschken and Miro overpowered Cunningham and Caro, 8-1, at the No. 2 doubles flight. Maehama and Goia picked up a forfeit win at No. 3 pair when the Warhawks forfeited that spot.

Barry’s No. 1 doubles team of Elisabeth Abanda and Emma Onila dropped their match to Jade Curtis and Tiffany William, 8-5. Onila lost to the No. 1-ranked singles player in NAIA, battling Curtis through three sets before succumbing, 4-6, 6-1, 14-12.

The Buccaneers will host Division II newcomer Oklahoma Christian at 10 a.m. Sunday. The Bucs also play Division I Rutgers at 3 p.m. Sunday at Buccaneer Tennis Center.

Fritschken led the No. 4 Buccaneers to three road wins over nationally-ranked opponents. Playing in the top singles slot and No. 2 doubles position, Fritschken was 2-0 in singles and picked up three doubles victories with Kimmy Twelker. In a 6-3 victory over No. 3 Abilene Christian, Fritschken, who is ranked No. 19 in NCAA Division II singles, defeated No. 5 Julia Mongin, 6-3, 6-4. She also combined with Twelker for an 8-5 triumph over the No. 14 tandem of Micah Hermsdorf and Hannah Kelley. In a 9-0 sweep against No. 22 St. Edward's, Fritschken blanked Alexandra Khadhyzan, 6-0, 6-0, and joined Twelker for an 8-2 win over Paige Rachel and Rafaela Haegele. The Bucs' duo was impressive again in Barry's 8-0 win over No. 33 Incarnate Word as they rolled past Nicole Karaklis and Malisa Vatanadilok, 8-1.

The only drama of the match came at number one singles as both Barry’s Linda Fritschken and UIW’s Ivana Katavic were both defaulted by the referee after a disagreement on the score.

The Bucs won the other eight matches, most of them handily. At number one doubles, Elisabeth Abanda and Emma Onila derailed Katavic and Andi Botha 8-5. The Bucs took the other two flights by identical 8-1 scores.

In singles, the Bucs (13-0) took three of the five finished matches by 6-0, 6-0 scores. Onila (#3), Akemi Maehama (#5) and Isabela Miro (#6) all posted flawless victories. Abanda’s 6-1, 7-5 win over Botha at number two was the closest the Cardinals (4-4) would come.

The Bucs return home to Miami Shores for the start of a six-match home stand, kicking off with NAIA #2-ranked Auburn-Montgomery on Thursday, Mar. 14.

The Bucs (11-0) stayed unbeaten on the season with a masterful performance against the Wildcats.

“We’re really proud of them (the team),” coach Avi Kigel said. “It was some pretty tough conditions: very windy, really cold for singles and much faster courts than we’ve been on. Plus, they (Abilene) had a huge crowd that was very involved. It was a great atmosphere for tennis. But we really played well and hammered out a big win today.”

The Bucs took a 2-1 advantage in doubles, knocking off both of the Wildcats’ ranked pairs. ACU, which was coming off a doubles sweep of NCAA Division I Kentucky, floundered at the top two flights. Barry’s Elisabeth Abanda and Emma Onila dominated Julia Mongin and Brittney Reed, the fifth-ranked duo in Division II, 8-1 at number one.

At number two, Linda Fritschken and Kimmy Twelker posted an 8-5 win over 14th-ranked Micah Hermsdorf and Hannah Kelley.

At the third doubles, Barry’s Isabela Miro and Karina Goia were up a break most of the match before ACU’s Laura Mongin and Kaysie Hermsdorf knotted the match up at 8-8. In the tiebreaker, the Buccaneer duo led again 5-1, before the Wildcats rallied for an 11-9 win.

Up 2-1 heading into singles, Onila quickly made it 3-1 with a 6-0, 6-0 win over Reed at number three, and Goia put the Bucs on the brink of the win with a 6-3, 6-1 win over Kaysie Hermsdorf at number five.

But Laura Mongin inched the Wildcats back with a 6-3, 6-3 win over Twelker, her first loss as a Buccaneer, at number four and 32nd-ranked Micah Hermsdorf made it 4-3 with a 7-5, 7-6 (3) win over Abanda at number two.

With Akemi Maehama trailing 3-0 in the third set at number six and the crowd starting to get involved, 19th-ranked Fritschken pulled a huge 6-3, 6-4 upset of fifth-ranked Julia Mongin at number one singles to clinch the match for the Bucs. With the win in the bag, Maehama responded with a 6-0 run to take the third set from Hannah Kelley and complete a 6-2, 4-6, 6-3 win.

The Bucs improved to 11-0 on the season, while Abilene Christian fell to 8-3 with their first loss to a Division II foe. The Bucs continue their march through Texas with a Thursday matchup against 22nd-ranked St. Edwards in Austin.

At No. 2, Linda Fritschken and Kimmy Twelker defeated Alexandra Johansson and Bianca Roberts 8-2, while at the final flight, Isabela Miro and Karina Goia beat Carlee Rizzolo and Iryna Serdyuk 8-1.

Singles was nearly as dominant, despite the Bucs lone ranked player’s absence from the lineup. Fritschken, ranked 19th, sat out the singles, but the Bucs still took five of six, winning all five in straight sets.

Abanda knocked off Kierberg 6-2, 6-1 at the top flight. Onila moved up to two to face the Sharks only ranked player and beat No. 37 Johansson 6-2, 6-2. Goia battled through a tight second set to defeat Rizzolo 6-1, 7-5 at number three. Both Onila and Goia remained a perfect 7-0 on the season in singles.

At No. 4, Twelker made short work of Serdyuk, 6-0, 6-1, while Akemi Maehama beat Kornienko 6-3, 6-0 at the fifth flight.

The Sharks’ lone win came in a super-tiebreaker at No. 6. After splitting sets, Luisa Pintado rallied in the third set, super-tiebreaker to beat Miro 1-6, 6-3, 10-8.

For Kigel, who in his fifth season has already won a national championship and three straight SSC titles, milestone victories aren't part of his vernacular. But hitting the century win certainly is worth savoring.

"I really don't look too much at records," Kigel said. "I look at how we progress each match, and we try to get better each day in practice. I'm happy to get there. It means we're working hard. We're just looking to get better from one match to the next. If we do that, we'll be very successful at the end of the season."

The Bucs travel to the Valdosta State Tournament this weekend in Georgia to meet No. 10 West Florida, the host Blazers and No. 50 Clayton State. It will begin a stretch of six matches in eight days in Georgia and Texas.

"I think the season is going pretty well so far," Kigel said. "Yes, the season is going to get tougher. We just try to take each match as its own, and try to get better."

It was a good day for her and Barry's No. 5 nationally-ranked women's tennis team Sunday.

The Buccaneers took care of business, beating No. 12 Saint Leo, 9-0, at Buccaneer Tennis Center. The Lions came into the match with good momentum, having knocked off No. 4 Lynn, 5-4, a week earlier.

"I feel really good to be a Buccaneer," said Twelker after delivering two quick victories for her team against one of the better opponents Barry has seen thus far. "I'm proud of our team, and I'm proud of the way that we've played early in the season."

Twelker and Linda Fritschken ripped off an 8-1 No. 2 doubles victory over Saint Leo's Pauline Helgesson and Maria Benkirane to get the Bucs started. Twelker then made quick work of Emily Singleton, 6-1, 6-1, at No. 5 singles. Singleton entered the match ranked No. 13 in the South Region.

"I felt good, I had confidence," Twelker said. "I played for my team, and I pushed myself."

Barry's No. 1 pairs partners Elisabeth Abanda and Emma Onila held on for an 8-6 victory over Laura Kemkes and Singleton. Onila's cross-court backhand set up her forehand smash down the line as she used both sides of the court to close out the match.

Onila registered maybe the most impressive win of the day as she beat Kemkes, who entered the spring ranked 18th in the country, in straight sets, 6-1, 6-2.

The Buccaneers No. 3 duo of Karina Goia and Isabela Miro de Campos defeated Coralie Pesenti and Adrianna Daskiewicz, 8-5. Goia hit a wicked backhand into the corner to secure match point.

Goia was dominant in a 6-0, 6-0 No. 4 singles win over Benkirane. Abanda dusted off Pesenti, 6-1, 6-1, at the top flight. Ranked 19th in the nation, Fritschken coasted to a 6-0, 6-1 win over Helgesson at the No. 2 flight. Akemi Maehama defeated Daskiewicz, 6-4, 6-2, at No. 6 in the lengthiest match of the day, filled with a series of long rallies. Daskiewicz is ranked No. 19 in the region.

"It's good to be on the side where we're winning," Twelker said.
