Background: The Sensory Integrative Approach

These recommendations for use of a sensory garden are based on the Sensory Integrative Approach.

According to R.C. Shaaf and L.J. Miller (2005). “Occupational Therapy with a Sensory Integrative Approach is designed to guide intervention for children who have significant difficulty processing sensory information”.

Dr. Lucy J. Miller and her colleagues have updated the original theory of Dr. Jean A. Ayres by adding a classification of subtypes under the umbrella term “sensory processing disorder”.

This sensory garden site will focus on the subtype called sensory modulation disorders, as well as how to apply the use of a garden for these children.
