Douglas M. Mitchell, Ph.D., OTR/L
Program Director & Associate Professor

Douglas M. Mitchell has been director of Barry's Occupational Therapy Program since 1995. He grew up in Detroit, Michigan. After serving in the army, he earned a B.S. degree in occupational therapy at Eastern Michigan University. Dr. Mitchell worked in an outpatient program for children and adolescents with emotional disorders and managed the occupational and recreational therapy department in a psychiatric hospital, then returned to school. He earned a M.S. degree in occupational therapy and a certificate in gerontology at Wayne State University, where as a graduate assistant faculty member, he also taught undergraduate courses. Dr. Mitchell's 32-year career as a therapist has also included teaching at Eastern Michigan University, private practice and consultation, research in the rheumatology program at the University of Michigan, and management of the occupational therapy departments in a general hospital and a regional rehabilitation center in Detroit. Dr. Mitchell recently completed a two-year term as Vice President of the Florida Occupational Therapy Association. Dr. Mitchell was awarded a Ph.D. in Leadership and Education from Barry University in 2005. His leisure interests include weight training, running and woodworking.
