Tisa McGhee
Assistant Professor Teaching PhilosophySocial work is about advocating for people in need. Teaching social work is about inspiring others to learn how to advocate for those who cannot advocate for themselves. “When I think about the goals and objectives I want for students who attend courses I teach, I want them to use information presented to learn how to think critically, challenging their own personal growth and learning. I also want them to be able to use the information they are learning independently.” My teaching methods and approaches assist me in achieving the goal of independent thinking. I organize and prioritize information so that students are frequently exposed to important concepts and processes for learning the material. I demonstrate listening and respect for all students so that condition is continued in the classroom setting by the students themselves and when they go out to become social workers in the field. My hope is that students walk away with empathy and encouragement in their personal interactions with me and can translate that again in their future social work activities.
