Camillus House

On April 19th Professor Zaoui's Practice I BSW class visited Camillus House. Maria Peralta, Community Relations Manager of Camillus House, led the tour. Camillus House has served the homeless population of South Florida for over 54 years. They offer both male and female adults a safe place to get a free meal(s), shower, sleep, develop friendships as well as substance abuse treatment. Camillus House "offers a second chance to the desperate, the lonely and the ones society has left behind" (Camilus House website: www.camillushouse.org). As a result of our visit, the majority of the BSW students expressed feeling a sense of hope and a greater sense of purpose in their social work trajectory, some left feeling responsible to advocate and take action for this overwhelming surplus in homelessness in the South Florida area.
