On Thursday, Feb. 10, Barry’s School of Social Work welcomed backed alumni and awarded 10 students with scholarships during its Annual Scholarship Awards and Alumni Reception held in Andreas Room 111. The scholarships awarded included the Kolasa Scholarship, the Joan Gerstein Memorial Scholarship, the John M. Riley Memorial Scholarship and the Marilyn Zide Memorial Scholarship. The annual reception also honored the four donors of the awarded scholarships, paying tribute to Dr. Neta Kolasa, the late John M. Riley, the late Marilyn Zide, and the late Joan Gerstein. As part of the event, Dr. Scott spotlighted each donor and their respective contributions to Barry’s School of Social Work during an unveiling ceremony featuring donor portraits. Candles were lit in remembrance of the three deceased donors, who were represented at the event by family and friends, as roses were placed in front of donor portraits. Dr. Neta Kolasa, who received her master’s in social work from Barry University, spoke about her experience as a student at Barry and emphasized the important role of social workers in society. “Social workers just don’t think about change,” Kolasa said. “They make change…for the better…I’m not only Barry proud, I’m especially proud of the School of Social Work.” During the event, the School of Social Work also inaugurated the School of Social Work Fellowship Fund. Walter Davis, LTC, MSW, an alumnus of the School of Social Work’s MSW Program, and Sue Riley, John Riley’s daughter, were recognized for their support in establishing the fund.
