The Barry University community is invited and encouraged to take part in the Sexual Awareness Week at Barry University from April 13 – April 17, 2015.
On March 31, 2014, President Barack Obama proclaimed April as National Sexual Assault Awareness and Prevention Month. He has urged all Americans to support survivors of sexual assault and work together to prevent these crimes in their communities.
To honor this month, the week of April 13th has been designated as Sexual Assault Awareness Week on Barry University’s campus. Sexual Assault Awareness Week is a collaborative week of events aimed at raising awareness and providing education surrounding the issues of sexual violence, prevention, consent and bystander interventions.
Monday, April 13:
“Paint the Campus Teal”
Across the country, the teal ribbon has come to represent awareness about sexual assault. In addition to the demonstration of support for victims and advocates, the display of teal ribbons throughout Barry University’s campus conveys a powerful message that there’s no place for assault in our community.

Commit to ending sexual violence on Barry University’s campus by signing the “It’s On Us” pledge. This pledge is a personal commitment to help keep women and men safe from sexual assault. It is a promise not to be a bystander to the problem, but to be a part of the solution!
Tuesday, April 14:
Clothesline Project

The Clothesline Project (CLP) is a program started on Cape Cod, MA in 1990 to address the issue of violence against women. It is a vehicle for women affected by violence to express their emotions by decorating a shirt. They then hang the shirt on a clothesline to be viewed by others as testimony to the problem of violence against women. The shirts will be displayed in Andreas Courtyard and Landon Student Union.
Wednesday, April 15:
Pinwheel Display
Thompson Lawn

Supporters will be able to write a message and place it on a pinwheel and lining the pinwheel along the sidewalk. The idea of the pinwheel is to represent hope for a brighter tomorrow. Our goal of the pinwheels is to raise awareness and the importance of supporting the prevention of sexual assaults.
White Ribbon Campaign
Thompson and Landon Atrium
11am – 2pm
Male faculty, staff and students will be given white ribbons and asked to sign the “white ribbon campaign.” The White Ribbon symbolizes a man's pledge to never commit, condone, or remain silent about violence against women. The White Ribbon Campaign is the world's largest effort by men to end men's violence against women.
Women Get S.A.F.E.

Women Get S.A.F.E. is a three hour program that is designed to educate women on how to become more aware of their surroundings and how to protect themselves from crime.
Film Screening: Miss Representation

5pm – 8pm
Miss Representation is a documentary film that “explores the under-representation of women in positions of power and influence in America, and challenges the media's limited portrayal of what it means to be a powerful woman.” Film viewing will be followed by a panel discussion led by Dr. Laura Finley.

Sexual Assault Bystander Intervention: Dr. Jill Levenson

This program will engage young men and women in recognizing situations that raise the risk for sexual assault, the steps and strategies for intervening to prevent sexual victimization, and what to do if a friend or classmate reveals that he or she has been sexually assaulted. Students will be encouraged to take leadership roles in creating a campus community that promotes safe and healthy sexual boundaries.
Friday, April 17:
Healing Service in Honor of Sexual Assault Survivors: Fr. Cristobal

All are welcome to attend a special mass in honor of survivors of sexual assault. Come and pray with us for greater social awareness, healing and renewal, in remembrance of Sexual Assault Awareness Week.
