Faculty
Karen A. Callaghan, professor of sociology
and department chair, earned a BA from La Salle College, and an
MA and Ph.D. from the Ohio State University. Callaghan teaches courses
on sociological theory, sociology of race, class, and gender, marriage
and the family, and juvenile delinquency. She has edited a collection
of essays on women and beauty, and co-authored a book on the cultural
politics of race, violence, and democracy, in addition to publishing
several articles on the contemporary family, adolescence, social
theory, symbolic violence and images of racial-ethnic identity,
and workplace organization and computerization. Her most recent
work focuses on education and globalization.

Manuel Jesus Caro, assistant professor
of sociology and criminology, earned the BA from the University
of Granada, and the MA and Ph.D. from the University of Miami. Caro
teaches courses on introductory criminology, theories of deviance,
and women and crime. His professional interests include sociological
and criminological theories, cultural studies, and globalization
studies. Caro has co-edited a book on quantum theory and culture,
has published several articles, and has presented his work at national
and international conferences.

Luigi Esposito, assistant professor of
sociology and criminology, earned the BA from Florida International
University and the MA from University of Miami. He is a Ph.D. candidate
in sociology at the University of Miami. Esposito teaches courses
in sociology of law, social problems, and criminology. His professional
interests also include race-ethnic relations and sociological theory.
Esposito's research has been published in The Sociological Quarterly
and the Journal of Aging and Identity.

Gary Grizzle, associate professor of sociology,
earned a BS from Florida International University, an MS from Florida
State University, and the Ph.D. from Northwestern University. Grizzle
teaches courses on social problems, marriage and the family, sociology
of art, sociology of religion, and research methodology. His professional
interests include divorce and remarriage, sociology of film, urban
myths and folklore, and sociology of religion. Grizzle's research
on remarriage has been published in the Journal of Divorce and
Remarriage.

Lisa Konczal, assistant professor
of sociology and criminology, earned the BA, MA, and Ph.D. from
Florida International University. Konczal teaches courses on criminology,
juvenile delinquency, and introductory sociology. Her professional
interests include immigration-ethnicity studies and sociology of
education. Her most recent position was Post-Doctorate Researcher
with the Center for Migration and Development, Princeton University.
Konczal has presented her work at regional and national conferences.
Her recent work on the academic attitudes of immigrant adolescents
will be published in The International Journal of Educational
Policy, Research, and Practice.

Fernando M. Perez , assistant professor of sociology and criminology, earned the BS and MS from Florida State University and the Ph.D. at the University of Miami. Perez teaches courses on criminology, white-collar and corporate crime, drugs, and social problems. His professional interests include sociological and criminological theory, race-ethnic relations, cultural and Latin American studies, and the "wars" on crime and drugs. His recent work was published in the Journal of Social Work in Disability and Rehabilitation.
