Dr. Leta Hicks, Associate Professor, Director, Graduate Programs

Dr. Leta HicksDr. Hicks completed both the Master of Science and Doctor of Education degrees in Health, Physical Education, and Leisure Scienceat Oklahoma State University. At Barry University she serves as associate dean of the School of Human Performance and Leisure Sciences (HPLS) and Chair of the Department of Sport and Exercise Sciences (SES). In addition, she is the Coordinator of the Graduate Program.  She served as interim dean of HPLS in 1998-1999. Prior to coming to Barry University in 1994, Dr. Hicks was employed at Gordon College in Wenham, Massachusetts, as assistant professor of movement science and physical education and at Saint Leo College in Saint Leo, Florida, as assistant professor of physical education and sport management and chair of the Department of Education.

Dr. Hicks has been extensively involved in professional activities, serving as president of the Educational Leadership Association of the Florida Alliance of Health, Physical Education, Recreation, and Dance, and as District II Representative for Phi Epsilon Kappa. She has served in consultant and advisory roles for a number of state and local organizations. She is presently developing partnerships between the Barry University Department of SES and two Wellness Careers Magnet Schools in Broward County, Florida. She has given presentations at national, regional, and state professional meetings. Her present research interests are in two areas: wellness education in middle schools and physical activity for the older adult population.
