Frequently Asked Questions

Who attends?

All full-time, undergraduate students new to Barry attend one of the scheduled StART sessions.

What is the advantage of attending?

All the students who participate in StART will be able to meet with their academic advisors, design their schedules, register for classes, take placement tests, order books, and obtain their student ID, to mention only a few of the advantages. After completing the program, all you will have left to do is to come back at the beginning of the semester to begin classes.

What is the cost to attend StART/Spring Orientation?

Your enrollment deposit of $225 will cover the cost of StART for you and two guests. Additional guests are welcome, but please note their meals will not be complimentary as listed on the schedule, rather they can be purchased upon arrival to the dining hall.

Is there a cost for my family to attend StART?

Every new student attending StART is invited to bring up to two (2) family members at no additional charge. These guests will be given meal passes for those meals which are listed as complimentary on the schedule. Any additional guests will be required to pay for their meals upon arrival to the dining hall.

Additionally, two guests per student are allowed to stay on-campus in a designated residence hall and will be charged $30 per person per night. **Please note this only applies for the June StART programs, not the August or January programs.

Where are students staying?

All students attending the June StART programs are expected to stay on campus in the residence halls for the duration of the program, including those who plan to commute to campus in the fall.  Those attending the StART program in August and the Spring StART program in January will either move into their new residence hall room or will commute from home for the program.
Bed linens and towels will be provided for those students staying on campus during the June programs.

Where should families stay?

Several hotels offer Barry University rates.  Please refer to the list we provide on this website for further information.

Can my family stay on campus?

Family members can only stay on campus during the June StART programs. A limited number of spaces for family members are available on campus. These spaces will be filled on a first-come, first-served basis. Due to space limitations, a maximum of two family members will be able to stay on campus. Each of these rooms is available for $30 per person per night and linens will be provided for guests.

Let us offer a few words of caution and a quick taste of what staying in the residence halls can be like. Staying on campus can be a lot of fun and will definitely give you a taste of what your student will experience in the fall. However, you must remember that when students move in, they decorate and personalize the room. If you choose to stay on campus, you will get a room in a "bare bones" state. Every bedroom shares a bathroom with the room next door and rooms are only equipped with two twin beds. There are be no telephones or TVs in the rooms, nor is there any room service. We also respectfully request that all rooms remain smoke free.

Reservations for family members to stay on campus can be made when the student submits their reservation for the StART program online. Please contact the Center for Leadership and Transition Services at 305-899-3992 if you have further questions regarding family members staying on campus.

What if I have not paid my enrollment deposit?

Remember, your Enrollment Deposit is the key to attending the StART program. Without this fee being paid, you will not be able to attend StART. It is possible to pay your Enrollment Deposit at StART, however, it is strongly encouraged that you make this payment prior to your arrival.

What should I expect at StART?

StART will be a busy and exciting time for you. Not sure what to wear? Casual, comfortable clothes with very comfortable shoes are highly recommended. What will you be doing? Students will meet with a faculty advisor - the person who will help plan out your first semester schedule; take any challenge or placement tests required; order books, take a closer look at residence halls, meet fellow classmates, and obtain your student ID and campus mailbox. Expect to meet many faculty, staff, administrators and current students who are interested in your success at Barry. Finally, expect to learn a lot about Barry University and what types of transition issues you (and your family) will be challenged with over the next six months.

What medical forms do I need to complete?

Resident and International students must provide proof of insurance and submit a completed Health Information Form.

Am I required to have vaccinations or to buy health insurance?
