Feast of St. Francis

Feast of St. Francis

The Department of Campus Ministry invites the Barry community to the Feast of Saint Francis

Date: Friday, Oct. 3, 2014
Time: 12 p.m.
Location: Cor Jesu Chapel

The Feast of St. Francis remembers Francis of Assisi, one of the most popular Catholic saints of all time. Born in Italy in 1181 to a noble family, Francis had a profound experience of Christ calling him to build up and heal the Church. This conversion led him to renounce his family´s wealth and instead embrace the life of a preaching beggar. Accompanied by others who sought to imitate his radical way of living and preaching the Gospel, he founded the men´s religious community known as the Order of Friar´s Minor; the women´s Order of St. Claire, which he co-founded with his friend and collaborator St. Claire of Assisi; and the Third Order of Saint Francis for lay women and men. A famous saying that is often attributed to him remains as relevant today as it was in the thirteenth century: ¨Preach the Gospel always; and when necessary, use words.
