MIAMI SHORES, Fla. – Barry University's volleyball team swept Eckerd, 28-26, 25-16, 26-24, Friday in the Sunshine State Conference opener at home.

It was the first time since 2004 the Buccaneers beat Eckerd in three sets.

The Bucs (8-1, 1-0 SSC) hit .304 in the middle set, converting 70 percent of their sideout opportunities, and never let Eckerd (7-2, 0-1) grab a share of the lead. That put the Bucs up 2-0 in the match.

The Tritons led 15-11 in the third set, but Barry rallied to take a 19-18 lead on a kill by Jayla Trombley. Trombley finished with 10 kills and 10 digs, while hitting .318.

Grace Jones’ kill put Eckerd ahead 23-22, but a kill by Trombley, two Tritons errors and a putaway by Barry’s Eva Raat gave the Buccaneers the sweep.

The Bucs and Tritons battled through seven ties and five lead changes in the third set.

Raat had nine kills, a .368 attack percentage, three aces and two blocks.

Barry served eight aces, including two by Jasmine Serna, who finished with 15 asssists and eight digs. Anita Oppenauer had four kills, and hit .517 with two blocks. Brittany Jaco had 11 digs.

Eckerd’s Ali McAlvany had 15 kills and 13 digs.

Barry hosts Rollins at 4 p.m. Saturday.
