Barry faculty, students participate in IBM COMMON Conference

Faculty and students from the Barry University Department of Math and Computer Sciences recently joined students and academics from around the country at the COMMON Annual Meeting and Exposition held at the Westin Beach Resort in Fort Lauderdale.

Sponsored by IBM, COMMON is a partnership between IBM, the computer industry, and academia. The organization aims to develop and deliver leadership, education to the field of Power Systems business.

Barry was represented at the conference by six computer information systems majors and Ricardo Jimenez, PhD, assistant professor of computer science. Barry Associate CIO Hernan Londono, PhD, assisted the students’ attendance at the conference by helping arrange for university vendors to cover the cost. The conference allowed Barry’s computer science students to gain a better understanding of the projects computer scientists are working on and enabled them to meet and network with computer science professionals from around the country.

The Annual Meeting is COMMON’s largest educational event of the year, with four full days of in-depth IBMi, AIX, and Linux-related education that includes all-day pre-conference workshops, open labs and a wide variety of regular-length sessions. It is the annual meeting of the COMMON membership and the largest gathering of the Power Systems user community.
