Founders’ Week Mass and Freshmen Tree Planting

Founders’ Week Mass and Freshmen Tree Planting

Monday, November 12, 2018

  • 12 pm Founders’ Week Mass - Cor Jesu Chapel
  • 1 pm Freshmen Tree Planting Reception in honor of Arbor Day- LaVoie Hall

All students, faculty, and staff are invited to the traditional Founders' Week mass which honors the vision and legacy of Mother Mary Gerald Barry, Bishop Patrick Barry, Monsignor William Barry, Mayor John Thompson, and the Adrian Dominican Sisters for whom Barry is a sponsored institution. Founders’ Week Mass has always been held as part of our Founders’ celebration on the closest day to Bishop Patrick Barry’s birthday.

Following this year’s mass, one of the oldest traditions at Barry University will be revived: planting a tree in honor of the freshman class. First celebrated on May 2, 1941, Arbor Day called for every new class to plant a tree which was then blessed by the University priest. The Arbor Day pledge and hymn were also sung at the planting site.
