Registration for MLK Day of Service 2019 is now open!

Unity is the theme of Barry University’s Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Day of Service.  The event is scheduled from 8:00 am to 1:00 pm on January 19, the Saturday that precedes the King Holiday in 2019. Participants will honor the civil rights leader’s legacy and learn about contemporary social issues through collaborative service.

The day’s theme references a commencement address given at Morehouse College in 1959 by Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. in which he urges the graduates of his alma mater to rise above the limits of individualistic concerns, “We must learn to live together as brothers or perish together as fools.”

During Barry’s MLK Day of Service, students, faculty, and staff will address current social issues affecting Miami’s communities of color, including youth development, public health , and environmental justice. In an expression of unity, they will support local organizations by working in community gardens, landscaping public spaces, and beautifying community centers in Liberty City, Little Haiti, North Miami, and Virginia Key.

According to the Corporation for National and Community Service, the MLK Day of Service is an “opportunity for Americans to honor Dr. King’s legacy through service.”

Participants are asked to register online and to wear closed-toe shoes at the service sites. T-shirts, breakfast, and barbecue lunch will be provided.
