Meet the Administration Staff

Dr. Michael Griffin

Michael J. Griffin, Ed.D.
Vice President for Student Affairs

Michael Griffin has been with Barry University since 1987. He holds an undergraduate degree from Siena Heights College in Adrian, Michigan and a doctoral degree in Higher Education from Nova Southeastern University. As Vice President of Student Services, Dr. Griffin has responsibility for all departments within the Division of Student Services. Dr. Griffin also teaches higher education courses in the School of Education.

Dr. Eileen McDonough

Eileen McDonough, Ed.D.
Associate Vice President for Student Affairs

Eileen McDonough has been at Barry University since 1970 and has served in various positions in Academic and Student Affairs. She holds a BA from Chestnut Hill College , Masters degrees from Marquette University and Barry University , and a doctoral degree in Higher Education Administration from Nova University . Dr. McDonough also serves as the NCAA Faculty Athletic representative and holds the rank of professor in the School of Education.

Ms. Maria Alvarez

Maria Luisa Alvarez
Associate Vice President for Student Affairs

Maria Luisa Alvarez was named Associate Vice President for Student Services in July 2000 and Dean of Students in July 2005. She earned a BS from Georgetown University , an MBA from Nova Southeastern University and a Ph.D. in Educational Leadership here at Barry. Dr. Alvarez arrived at Barry in 1987 and served in the Institutional Advancement Division until 1992 when she joined the Division of Student Services as director of Residential Life.

In her role as Associate Vice President, Dr. Alvarez oversees:

  • Office of Residential Life
  • Office of Student Activities
  • Inter-Cultural Center
  • Volunteer Center

In her role as Dean of Students, Dr. Alvarez oversees the university's judicial system, is a student advocate and directs programs that promote learning and personal development.

Jean Hock, M.S.
Assistant Vice President for Student Affairs

Jean Hock was appointed as Assistant Vice President in July 2006. She was formerly the director of Residential Life, having been named to that position in fall of 2001. Ms. Hock has served at Barry University since 1986, when she worked in the Division of Enrollment Management as an admissions counselor and then assistant director of Financial Aid. She holds a BA as well as an MS in Higher Education Administration from Barry University .

Janet Dowd
Administrative Assistant

Janet Dowd serves as Office Manager for the executive offices, coordinating the Administrative staff of the Vice President for Student Affairs and the departments within the division. Ms. Dowd has many years of experience in administrative and clerical assistance. Ms. Dowd joined the staff at Barry in January 2004.
