The Office of Campus Ministry, in the spirit of St. Dominic’s charism to bless, to preach, and to praise, invites the community into a closer relationship with God by fostering awareness of the University’s mission, providing occasions for prayer and worship, times of reflection and retreat, and opportunities to study, celebrate and act on the Word of God.   Campus Ministry oversees the Sacramental life of the community by offering daily and Sunday Mass, providing the Sacrament of Reconciliation, as well as facilitating the RCIA (Rite of Christian Initiation for Adults), Confirmation classes and marriage preparation programs.
Campus Ministry staff strives to provide insight into the Gospel message and to facilitate avenues of constructive and open dialogue on living a Christian life in the modern world through hospitality and educational programs, as well as opportunities for community service, social analysis and theological reflection on issues of peace and justice. Believing that all men and women are united in one human family, Campus Ministry works to serve students of all faith backgrounds, and promotes a non-proselytization policy. All students are encouraged to seek a fitting response to the presence of God in their lives while fulfilling their academic pursuits.

de Porres Community Service Center

Heeding the Christian call to serve the poor, the Office of Campus Ministry’s de Porres Center for Community Services provides opportunities for involvement in serving the local and global communities.  The Center is named for the 16th century saint of the Dominican Order, St. Martin de Porres, who lived and ministered in Lima, Peru devoting his life to prayer and serving the poor.  Martin, himself a person of color (his mother was a freed African slave and his father a Spanish nobleman,) worked tirelessly to bring together the people of his city divided by racial, ethnic and religious differences.  Canonized by the Catholic Church in 1962, he was named the patron saint of social justice for the universal Church.  It is in the spirit of St. Martin that the Center develops and promotes volunteer opportunities on a weekly and monthly basis as well as organizing several community service events throughout the year, such as the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Day of Service and the Volunteer Fair.

The Center supports activities of service and social action by student clubs and groups as well as serving as a location for students to learn about and get involved in volunteer and social justice opportunities available in the local community.  In addition, the Center encourages Barry students to make the connections between faith, service, justice and the mission of the university by providing opportunities for theological reflection and integrative workshops.  Campus Ministry is always looking for student leaders, motivated by the Gospel call to serve their neighbor, to help promote student involvement, schedule volunteer trips and special events, and to create a spirit of teamwork, responsibility and collaboration among students and local placement sites.  There are myriad opportunities for involvement within many areas of service and need.  The Department of Campus Ministry, through the Center, also sponsors service organizations like the campus chapter of Habitat for Humanity and Alternative Spring Break.
