Failure to comply with the University health policy may negatively affect the student’s registration process and/or university housing arrangements.
Immunization
Medically documented proof of:
- Adult tetanus vaccination within the past 10 years (Tdap preferred)
- Two measles-mumps-rubella (MMR) vaccines (with the first dose at the age of 12 to 15 months or later and the second dose at age 4 to 6 years or later) or laboratory proof of immunity to measles, mumps, and rubella
- Meningitis vaccination within the past five years (required if living in campus housing)
All students are strongly encouraged to provide a statement of good health and proof of Hepatitis B, Hepatitis A, Varicella (if no documented case of chicken pox), annual influenza vaccinations, and PPD (tuberculosis) screenings prior to attending Barry University. All required and recommended vaccinations are available at the SHC.
Note: Immunization records received by the SHC are entered into the University computer system for lifelong retrieval. Hard copies of vaccinations administered by the staff of the SHC are maintained for seven years in the SHC. The SHC assists all academic programs by providing those immunizations that are required for academic matriculation and clinical rotations.
Acceptable records of immunizations may be obtained from the following sources and must be presented to the Student Health Center prior to the first day of classes and/or moving into any/all university provided housing):
- High school records

All Students Residing in University Provided Housing
All students residing in any/all university provided housing (including campus owned apartments) will be charged a per semester charge of $76 for the Student Health Center Supplemental Insurance plan unless otherwise waived. This policy provides 100% coverage for all services provided at the Student Health Center only, including; primary care, prescriptive medications dispensed by the ARNP in the SHC, and required immunizations (to a max. of $200). Class Excusals
The Student Health Center does not routinely provide excuses for students who miss class due to illness or injury. Students who need to miss class due to illness/injury are encouraged by their academic program and by the Student Health Center to notify their faculty that they are ill or injured and unable to attend (and follow the directions provided by the faculty member on the course syllabus.) It is the purview of the faculty to determine when or if a student will be excused from class.
This policy is consistent with our commitment to maintain confidentiality, encourage more appropriate use of health care resources, and support meaningful dialogue between teacher and student. Students are responsible for promptly notifying instructors about absences caused by illness or injury, preferably prior to the class time rather than after the class time.
Students with communicable illness or a serious long term illness or can request that a letter detailing the reason for the absence from the Dean of Students office or the Student Advocacy Office.
Emergency Transportation
The Student Health Center reserves the right to request medical clearance from any student who is transported to the emergency room from campus. If requested, the student must present medical clearance to Student Health Services within twenty-four (24) hours of returning to campus and /or the residence halls. Failure to comply may result in judicial action toward the student, including removal from university housing.
